It was a damp and eerie night no place in particular I wanted to go.
I sat alone at the bus station, listening to music, head bopping to and fro.
I didn’t have plans for the holidays, no one special I wanted to see.
I sat there trying to figure out just where if anyplace I wanted to be.
Sitting next to me was a young lady she looked as if she too would be alone.
We engage in lengthy conversation, she explained to me that she was heading home.
Going home for the holidays I asked, she said her family didn’t celebrate.
She was just going home to be alone, she had better leave it was getting late.
She asked if I had plans, I responded no, I wasn’t ready to go home just yet.
She said she usually wouldn’t do this, invite a stranger home, because we just met.
I explained I had no expectations, no need to be alarmed,
just the company of a smiling face, I promised her no harm.
She hesitated for an instance, but allowed for me to come along,
and spend some time at her place, and share the warmth of her home.
As we approached her driveway the glare of lights came from within her home.
She looked a little startled, she wasn’t expecting anyone she thought she’d be alone.
Then I sensed the smell of a thousand rain drenched hounds, I was getting a little scared.
I notice red eyes everywhere, hounds were snarling with their fangs exposed and bared.
She assured me, the hounds were kept for her safety, the lights inside must be her family.
They must have dropped by so she wouldn’t be alone, and to keep her company.
She opened the door and we started to walk in, I was getting jittery and a little jumpy.
Her family was in the doorway to greet her when she came in, they looked a little grumpy.
She introduced me to her family, I couldn’t put my finger on it, but something was strange.
As we sat at the dinner table, I couldn’t help but noticed none of them looked the same.
It was as if they were suddenly changing, right before my eyes.
They started to resemble the hounds I saw when we first approached outside.
They all said in unison we are glad you stopped by, and to have you for dinner.
There are no losers here we all serve a purpose, and tonight we all will be a winner.
As they bowed their heads to give thanks and to say their grace, I looked for an escape .
There were hounds at all the exits so I gasped my last sigh, took my last breath and accepted my fate.
