A woman has problems at her job.

I guess it was meant to be.  I knew I should have gotten another job.

I thought I was going to like this one.

I couldn't have been more wrong.

At first, working for Mr. Hildebrandt wasn't so bad: he showed me the ropes, introduced me to the staff, who seemed friendly enough.  Thought I was going to like it -- then last week, things started going downhill fast.

I think it's because I happen to be in a wheelchair because I have muscular dystrophy.  I feel as if they are taking advantage of me.  They found out about my health, and all of a sudden, I am suffering needless abuse because of it.

Case in point:  they think I am giong to die anyway, so they give me the fewest days to work.  I only work three days a week, and when I do work, people look at me with pity on their faces or ignore me, as though I don't even exist.  When they do pay attention to me, they say things about me behind my back -- cruel, malicious, mean-spirited things.

These people also treat me like I am stupid.  I guess their way of thinking is, just because my body is broken, then my brain must be too.  They talk condescendingly towards me, and I don't like it one bit.

The boss is no help.  Since I've been at my job, he's never paid me (still have to get my first paycheck).  I have bills to pay:  I need the money ... now, not yesterday!!

I could look for another job, but in all honesty, who would hire me?  I have a potentially fatal disease that can kill me down the road.  I'm in a wheelchair; I can no longer walk on my own.  I am over forty years old and am a single parent (I have an 11 year old son who has to help take care of me).  I have very few friends because I am shy, for one thing, and for another thing, people are intimidated by my electric wheelchair.

They see the wheelchair first before they even see me.  It is very annoying!!

Why can't people see that am ready and willing to work, that I will do my very best, even in light of having muscular dystrophy?  I am a good person with a good heart; I don't deserve to be treated like I am mentally disabled or that I don't even matter!!

In my previous job (a teacher; I was a teacher for ten years before my muscular dystrophy got bad; I taught kindergarten), I proved to be a hard worker and missed maybe five days max, and it was only because I'd had the flu.  Any other time, I was there, regardless of the weather!!

Now I'm stuck pushing papers at some darn insurance company, and I work for people who obviously hate me because I am disabled; I am bringing them down, according to their eyes, and I have a boss who is nothing but a uncaring shark who would rather keep my money that I worked for for himself!  He is also enjoying watching me floundering and making me worry unnecessarily about my money that he clearly owes me!!

I don't know what to do, and I am sick of it!! I am about to go crazy, and it is not going to be pretty!!!!

So much injustice in the world today, but someone should advise the fair labor board, that might wake up a few people...well written, Karen~

Sadly the ugly truth is that most people do see what catches the eye first, be it a wheelchair, crutches, obesity, blindness etc. some ridicule and make fun out of a sense of fear that it could happen to them, others are just nasty..either way it is sad that humanity has not gotten past this stage of evolution.

This sounds like the rant I gave in my poem "The Comfort of Exclusionism." :~) I have been on my own rampage about the unfair treatment of my daughter and her disability... Frustrating to say the very least!

Oh, I'd so be taking notes and calling the labor board -- wow. I'd hate to go to work for these people, too! Well done, Karen.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
