This is an excerpt from a short story that I wrote about seven years ago converted into spoken word.
At first glance there wasn't anything special about it, it looked just like any ordinary motorcycle that one might see on the street, but from the events that were yet to unfold I was totally wrong about that. I'd never ridden a motorcycle in my life; it was the summer of 2003. I came to town on the invitation of a good friend of mine, we've been buddies since elementary school, you know? Doing things that little boys aren't supposed to do or now that I think about it maybe they do, pulling pranks on poor unsuspecting folks, playing hooky from school so we could hang out at the arcade. Man those were the days Elston Jenkins, a good friend of mine, it's been over 10 years since I've seen him, seeing him again will bring back a flood of memories. When I knock on the door Elston opens it, he has a nervous look about him like the world is out to get him, he invites me inside, I ask him what is wrong, that's when he blurts out that he's made a deal with the devil and now he is coming to collect his soul. Puzzled by this revelation I look Elston over he seems frail like he hadn't slept in 12 months. After a moment of silence I ask Elston to explain himself, but instead of telling me he decides to show me. We end up in his backyard, across the way Elston points to a lonely motorcycle sitting in the corner. It's cursed! He said I'm thinking that machine over there is cursed? What a nut case I thought, as I approached, the bike seemed to emit an aura that I couldn't quite place, something wasn't right. I had never ridden a motorcycle in my life but there's a first time for everything and this one seemed to be calling me so I asked Elston to teach me. He was reluctant and flat out refused, but ever since we were kids I always got my way and before I knew it we wheeled the motorcycle from the yard into the street. Elston showed me how to start the engine, change gears, downshift, and apply the brakes see I'm a fast learner, so I picked it up right away, once I got used to riding the bike it was time to increase the speed. I push down on the accelerator and like greased lightning I went from 20....30....40...50...then something weird began to happen I black out, when I come to things are sailing by me in a blur that's when I realize that I am still moving, so I press on the brakes. Looking around I find myself in an area that I don't recognize people start to come out of their homes, they don't look too friendly and I am worried. "How did I get here?" Is what I'm thinking, none of this makes sense and then it hits me, this motorcycle has the ability to travel through time. I activated it when I reached 50 mph, it triggered an internal mechanism within the bike that teleported me to another place and time. But the worse was yet to come, I get the feeling that this neighborhood just isn't safe because the denizens of the community are getting a little too curious and that is my cue to move on, seemed easy enough. I push down on the accelerator the bike moves past people gathering in the streets in front of me. I turn the corner and find a stretch of road then accelerate in a burst of speed until I reach 50 mph and swoosh. I experience that feeling of blacking out as I come to I quickly realize that I've teleported right in the middle of a gang fight and that's when I realize the true nature of this bike, it needs souls to survive, the rider is the vehicle and a means to achieve this end. The gangsters stop fighting with each other and turn their attention to me. I try to take off and accelerate out of their, but the bike won't let me, like it was possessed by someone or something. The next thing that I knew the gangs from both sides began to fire shots at me but I am not hurt, the being inhabiting this bike has imbued me with some sort of magical protection from any type of harm. I am immortal, no one can harm me, but others can be harmed. The bike begins to control the outcome of the battle by forcing me to kill every gang member in sight I am powerless to stop it. The bike has an appetite for destruction that is not of this world, after what seemed like an eternity the carnage stops and in its wake 45 gang members lay dead and dismembered. It seems like forever as a strange and eerie silence permeates the scene, when all of a sudden spectral lights began to rise from the dead and follow a procession towards the bike. What I thought was the bike's muffler begins to swell up and down as if it is alive while absorbing the souls of the dead, after the last soul is taken the bike seems to expand in size. It gives off an eerie glow, and when it has had its fill the bike allows me to resume control, but I can't move, I dare not move.
There are no police sirens, yet the area is strangely desolate, if not for the buildings surrounding me one would have thought I was in a desert. Sudden and strange thoughts of things to come race through my head and I waste no time in leaving this place. I have to find a way to get back where I came from and tell Elston of this experience, he is the only one who will believe me. I accelerate to 50 mph, the same experience but a different plan is to unfold as I end up in another neighborhood with tall broken down buildings; at the far end of the street a few hoodlums have gathered and are terrorizing the people.
My sudden appearance startles everyone, including the hoodlums who pull out their guns and fire shots at me. The bike begins to do something that it has never done before, it levitates as if on a wire and hurls us directly in the path of danger. The carnage is a scene out of a horror movie as limbs fly everywhere, the screams of the dying men is blood curdling, the sky seems to glow red with blood. The bike has taught me to kill it is like some demented pact that the bike and I have made, I do the killing the bike gets the souls. The innocents are spared from the carnage, but not the hoodlums as the spectral lights reappear, the bike takes its fill. I want this nightmare to end and like it was reading my thoughts the bike teleports me back to Elston's house and when I come to I am laying on Elston's couch, he sits next to me saying "are you ok? I tell him about everything that's happened.
