Nina and James were best of friends right from childhood. They lived on the ice caps of the tropics with their parents, and they loved the region like a monkey loves banana.
The parents of both friends never attended school, and neither did the two friends either, but they were well behaved and true values were inculcated into both friends individually by their parents.
They both loved fishing, as fish was their favourite meal. Both of them were hardworking, so much that before they were aged five, they had already mastered the art of fishing perfectly, much to the convenience of their parents.
Time passed by, and James fell in love with his dear friend Nina. Other guys approached Nina, but her mind was made up for her long time friend and boyfriend.
She was mocked day in day out for choosing a potbellied, black and poor guy for a future partner. "Sweetie, I have a little gift for you." "What's it my love?" Nina asked with an inquisitive eye as she fixed her gaze on the basket she was expecting fish from.
"Close your eyes!" James muttered as he opened the basket slowly and watched his fiancee shut her eyelids tightly. "Now you can open your eyes." Nina slowly opened her eyes to an immaculate white pebble beckoning to her.
She almost said 'yes' before the marriage proposal popped up.
At age six, they both tied the knot. It was a solemnisation of peace and bliss. They were blessed with twins. James came back from his usual fish hunt every afternoon, and still helped his wife with the chores.
He would scoop the one twin in his arms, at times the two girls, singing lullabies to get them to sleep or at least calmed, while she did the cooking, when successful with that, James would still go round the house on weekends, with general and heavy duty cleaning.
Nina always felt sorry for her husband, but she realised he was being considerate, and he knows well that she can't bear all the burden alone, but yet, she knew how tedious gliding over massive ice structures and diving into the cold water to get fish could be.
"Darling I think you should just get some rest. You've been working all day and you are still here working with me with the chores." She said with a tone of pity.
"But sweetheart, I know it's not easy shuffling between twin children, cooking and maintaining the whole house. Besides we both have this kids together, so we would take care of them together too."
"You are just like your father, he always took care of mom." "Don't forget that's because mom is also industrious and loving just as you are."
"Besides marriage is a union of two people working together as one unit. So one half has to complement the other half and vice versa."
"That's why I love and cherish you my lovely, potbellied, white stomached and black skinned husband." They both kissed while their twin babies made soft sounds like they were chuckling.
Did you ever wonder who the couple could be that were married as at age fives years?
Definitely they aren't humans. They are penguins.
Penguins are one of the most loyal creatures in the world and they are a perfect examples of a perfect marriage.
They practice courtship, and the male presents a white pebble to the female, as a symbol of an everlasting bond between them - till death do them part.
It's so painful, that these days, humans who are way complex than penguins in every respect, choose to have relationships or marriages that don't last.
Husbands and wives find it difficult to understand themselves. The husband claims he comes home everyday from heavy traffic, and therefore when the baby cries at night, they simply wake up the wife to take care of the baby while he sleeps and snores on.
Men must realise that being married is more tasking than being a single, and as such they need to realise that much of sacrifice has to be made to also complement the wife's efforts.
So if you can't go through the sacrifices, don't bother getting married.
The wife also goes to the market, which I bet is very stressful based on experience, she does the dishes, feeds the baby at intervals, she still prepares your meals, you still ask her for sex.
It's high time we realise that the women are undergoing difficult tasks than the heavy traffic and emotional stress we undergo.
Relationships especially in this part of the world is now based on how much a man can spend. A date now costs more than jewelleries. I always wondered why our own dating here can't just start with greeting cards, or a cup of coffee like the Europeans.
On valentine's day, presenting a bunch of flowers to a white woman is like giving her the world, but in Nigeria a bunch of car keys is even a piss of shit to our ladies.
It is a big shame to us, for penguins to know and practice the true rudiments of marriage and relationships better. Despite that they don't go to school like we do.
Lets change our mentality. As for sexual perverts, remember that whatever you have sex with, you are unified with that thing both physically and spiritually. So when you have sex with a demon possessed lady, you are united to a demon, and if it's a horse, its a pity.
Lets change our thinking. We are sure better and more complex than penguins.
Your analogy (parable?) turned into an article. I think you could've done a better job with the Penguin family. Instead of cleaning the house perhaps you could have cleaning the nest. And penguins do not cook their fish. But only Japanese and those showing off eat raw fish.
It is obvious you don't like some of the courtship and marriage practices in Nigeria. Sociologically, I believe that it is because of upward mobility in some sectors… Rising expectations. Flaunting being wealthy is not the same as being wealthy. Those that come from poor beginnings and get wealth have a tendency to be extravagant. Those that have always had wealth are not extravagant.
