I was working the afternoon shift in the summer of 1994 when I was dispatched to a civil standby. 

A civil standby is where a police presence is used to calm any potential threat of violence and this one happened to be a domestic problem between a husband and a wife. 

Two officers are always sent on these complaints and I was sent to assist. 

When I arrived on location, the other officer was standing on the front porch with the female complainant (wife). The female complainant was there to get her belongings. She explained to me that she had tried everything within her power to make her marriage work and all had failed. 

I said, “As for me and my house we serve the Lord Jesus, have you tried Jesus?” The female complainant looked at my partner and asked him while pointing at me, “is he for real?” My partner (a junior officer who knows I had been ordered not to mention God or Jesus while in uniform) responded rolling his eyes back, “yes that’s how he is.” The female complainant said, “I don’t have a problem with it, I just didn’t know police officers did this.” She then looked me in the eye and said, “before I leave, will you talk to my husband?” I told her, “If he will listen I will talk.”

We went inside and the husband agreed to listen. I advised both of them that according to God’s Word (The Holy Bible), which says where there is selfishness and jealousy, there is disorder and every evil practice comes out of this. You obviously need order restored and that’s where Jesus Christ comes in. God is a God of order so every successful relationship must possess sacrifice within divine boundaries. The husband meets the need, the wife meets his lead, the husband makes the wife feel secure, the wife makes him feel significant. God’s Word uses the example of Jesus as the groom and the church (the body of Christ) as the bride. We meet His lead by following His example and we make Him significant by believing He is who He says He is and by shining His light in all we do. Jesus Christ in turn makes us secure with a hope and a future as he provides our every need, without Jesus we can do nothing. So if you are saying you tried everything, then Jesus has failed you, and since hope is no respecter of persons, then no relationship has hope. The wife (female complainant) walked over to her husband, put her arms around him and said, “we haven’t tried Jesus and I am not leaving, thank you so very much.”

I could just feel the presence of the Holy Spirit as I was holding back my emotions.  My partner and I left the home. My partner commented prior to us getting back in our patrol cars, “it’s a good thing you showed up or she would be gone.” I responded, “that wasn’t me, that was Christ in me!” He said “yeh, right!” and left.  

If I had that kind of power I would just wave a wand and fix every home, this husband and wife were receptive and just answered the call according to;

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
