Sage Sweetwater dedicates this story to all school teachers. Read this to the children

...Once upon a time...in the land of OTTO MAGPIE...there was a good witch named CECILIA, and she was married to WARLOCK TOM...

...WITCH CECILIA didn't even own a broom, so she rode a white llama named CUSTER SPIT.  WARLOCK TOM rode a Harley motorcycle named CREEDENCE CLEARWATER...

...WITCH CECILIA and WARLOCK TOM helped all the little animals in the forest when they were hurt and sick.  WITCH CECILIA and WARLOCK TOM had a pet mountain lion named PUDDY SANDERS...

...The day before Halloween, WITCH CECILIA was out in the forest picking wild plums to feed her orphaned bear cubs, when she heard an evil laugh.  She turned around and spied on WICKED WANDA, the bad witch of OTTO MAGPIE, and her evil daughter, DEBBIE WARTNOSE...

...WITCH CECILIA could see a bubbling kettle.  She overheard WICKED WANDA say she was "fixin' to boil up a raccoon Halloween stew, but she didn't have a raccoon."  So WICKED WANDA and DEBBIE WARTNOSE rode off through OTTO MAGPIE FOREST on their Polaris gas-powered brooms to find a fat raccoon...

...WITCH CECILIA sprung on top of CUSTER SPIT, took tight hold of the reins, and rode him fast, dashing back to warn WARLOCK TOM that WICKED WANDA and DEBBIE WARTNOSE were going to boil a raccoon...

..."NO, THEY'RE NOT!" said WARLOCK TOM as he prepared for the witchhunt.  He slipped his electric finger over his real finger and spark started CREEDENCE CLEARWATER...

...WITCH CECILIA rode behind on CUSTER SPIT, and on a braided chain leash, she led PUDDY SANDERS beside her, through OTTO MAGPIE FOREST.  PUDDY SANDERS roared and sniffed for WICKED WANDA'S scent...

...WARLOCK TOM spotted the Polaris gas-powered brooms, lying on the ground by a noisy tree.  He looked up to see what was going on.   WICKED WANDA and DEBBIE WARTNOSE were stuck up in a tree, from chasing a pair of masked raccoons.  The two raccoons were making awful noises at the bad witches...

...WITCH CECILIA tied CUSTER SPIT and PUDDY SANDERS to another tree and ran over to hop on the other Polaris gas-powered broom.  WARLOCK TOM was already riding the other broom to the top of the tree.  He scooped one of the raccoons JC off the top branch and flew it to safety.  WITCH CECILIA rescued the other raccoon PENNY before WICKED WANDA speared it with her stew fork...

...After saving the two raccoons JC and PENNY, WITCH CECILIA and WARLOCK TOM landed the brooms and drained the gas out of them, and tossed the riding sticks into the beaver pond.  WICKED WANDA and DEBBIE WARTNOSE cried, as they watched their brooms sink under.  The brooms are what gave the bad witches their powers, and now, the bad witches have lost all of their evil powers...

...WARLOCK TOM pointed his magical electric finger at the tree branch the bad witches were hanging on, and struck the branch with a bolt of lightning, dumping WICKED WANDA and DEBBIE WARTNOSE into the beaver pond.  The wet, powerless witches turned into stringy, slimy moss that looked like yucky, floating spinach.  CUSTER SPIT sneezed and blew the green slime out of the water and it flew out of OTTO MAGPIE FOREST...

...On Halloween night, WITCH CECILIA and WARLOCK TOM dressed up like school teachers and gave out colored chalk, rulers, boxes of animal crackers, and cans of alphabet soup to the trick or treaters...

...Just before midnight, WITCH CECILIA and WARLOCK TOM heard a spooky noise at the door.  It sounded like WICKED WANDA'S evil laugh.  WARLOCK TOM opened the door and a stringy pile of slimy, icky green gunk dripped from the roof.  WITCH CECILIA and WARLOCK TOM looked up and high in the sky, by the moon, two witches were riding Polaris gas-powered brooms and skywriting this message with the broom exhaust...TRICK OR TREAT...WE'RE BAAA-CK!...THE END.

Loved all the tricks and treats that came with this fantastically accomplished modern fairy tale. Extending and updating traditional genres in an accessible and entertaining manner is not always an easy literary achievement. I can't say how students or teachers will feel about WITCH CECILIIA AND WARLOCK TOM but this reader is thrilled to meet them (so long as they stay on the page and don't try anything funny in my house:-).
