He felt badly about
Showing up at Julia’s
With no flowers,
No candy…
He had opted to bring
The wine coolers that had been in his frig
Since his birthday—
Three months now.
He hated wine coolers—
They gave him an awful headache.
Julia looked like the wine cooler type though.
He really didn’t care if she liked them or not--
He was a man on a mission;
And breaking out of his cube was his
First priority.
So, he wasn’t about to blow cash
On a first dinner date…
Julia came to the door
Dressed in hip hugger jeans
And a t-shirt that barely covered
Her navel.
He was immediately shocked,
And embarrassed.
He’d figured that since she was
The corporate type,
He’d dress conservatively—
Sport coat, slacks, responsible shoes
Polo shirt.
He never dreamed
That she’d look like this…
But, she liked the wine coolers—
Thought he was innovative
To bring coolers,
Instead of a bottle of wine…
And she was a good cook.
The eggplant parmesan melted in his mouth.
Julia had opted to serve the coolers with dinner.
He avoided that though--
Somehow Passion Punch and eggplant
Couldn’t mix in his mind…
It was like drinking kool-aid
Instead of milk
With corn flakes—
Something he’d had to do as a child
When his father couldn’t afford milk.
They were flavors only a poor man could love…
A poor man, he thought, and then shuddered.
He learned that Julia’s Dad
Owned the company she worked for.
He had forced her and her brother
To start from the bottom up since
One day they’d run the company…
She didn’t mind her cubicle.
Why would she, he thought--
When she will ultimately get
The corner office with the panoramic view?
He shared his cubicle tale with her,
Told her of his quest to leave it behind.
