Story based on an anonymous writer hired by the LA Sentinel to give his entertaining thoughtful opinions to help increase the paper's flagging circulation.
I sat there in my beat up, dirty, one bedroom flat on Los Tunas Blvd in the predominately immigrant town of Rosemead 10 miles east of LA and thought about the events that took place last Thursday.
As I sat there my train of thought strayed for a few minutes away from the "opinion piece" I needed to send to my new employers at the LA Sentinel by 5 PM. I looked away from the "blinking hypen" coutesy of Wordmax on my 6 year old out of date Arco computer and looked outside my window and saw a bunch of kids playing in the courtyard below.
Was it just last Thursday that this "transformation" took place? In ways I was now someone else. Someone different. I remember that Thurday morning like it was yesterday.
I woke up groggy and with a slight headache from a bottle of tequila I drank late the night before into a world of reality around 8 AM that Thurday to the irritating shrill of my phone. As I got out of bed and picked up the receiver in the living room my thoughts were still on the lovely dream I just had about my exgirlfriend Pam. Yes the dream was great as Pam was still with me and I had a great job, news editor of a major daily newspaper.
I also was about to sign a major book deal with a big name publisher when.... I heard the phone ring and reality sat in. No job, a gold digging ex girlfriend who left me for "John," an up and comping associate at a big Century City law firm, and just a few scribbled pages from silly ideas out of my head that weren't even equal to a hundreth of a manusrcipt.
So as espected I wasn't in the greatest mood when I answered the phone half asleep. "Yes" I snarled into the receiver. "Mr S?" a pleasent sounding middle aged male voice answered. "Yes" I snarled again thinking what kind of telemarketer was I talking to, probably a mortage loan officer. "Mr S this is Dan Jensen, edior at the Daily Sentinel. I've got your resume here and find your background interesting. I'd like to schedule an interview. We have a position open for an "opinion reporter" and would like to talk to you.
I hesitated for a few minutes. Yes I had been out of work for six months and yes my unemnployment was almost dried up.
