“How do I LOVE THEE… let me count the ways!”
Well Gurlz n’ Buoyz, just about two months ago now, I DID IT! Bought me a 2004 PT Cruiser at Carmax. When these ‘Babies’ first came out in 2001, I loved the look of them… kind of like an old ‘Hot-Rod’ but Brand-Spankin’ New, with modern conveniences! Although I had seen plenty of them on the street, I had never ever even sat in one, let alone experience the drive.
After searching on Carmax for several days, then checking Kelly bluebook values, for both the PT and my trade-in, 1997 Honda Civic EX, I found what I wanted. It was down in Laurel, Maryland, so I went to my local White Marsh store, met a rep, and asked to have it transferred (for free) on a Friday. She called me on Monday. Went there in the evening, and did a Test Drive. WOW! This Guy has ZIP! With a 2.4 Liter engine (ole Honda was only 1.6) it is a 50% increase in Power!
Drove it on Monday, signed all the paperwork on Tuesday, and pulled off that lot feeling like a KING! It’s designed to be a tad higher, with a roofline that rises towards the rear, about 5 inches, I think. Compared to my Honda (which I also loved, and had 130,000 miles on) I felt a bit higher, kind of like being in a SUV. As I aptly named him “SILVER” as in ‘Hi-Yo!’ he handles like a sportscar… can zig-zag around obstacles and curves with precision. I don’t know much about racing car mechanical stuff, but I think it has MacPherson struts, rack and pinion steering, and maybe even stabilizer bars? All I know is that this guy handles like a dream, is responsive as can be, and QUIET to boot!
Just for the fun of it, I went online today and read a review done by a professional auto reviewer who pointed out other features of which I was totally unaware: the front seats are mounted on raised platforms to provide extra foot room for rear passengers, that he says can be as tall as 6’9”
and still be quite comfortable – besides the ‘normal’ glove box on the dash, there is another separate storage bin mounted under the front passenger’s seat – as well as a large map pocket behind the driver’s seat – and a Second Power Jack for rear passengers (along with center cupholder) – and a Third Power Jack to the right of the rear Tailgate!
Now, there is only one other option that I was interested in, a SUN-MOON roof. Then I discovered that this feature was only available on the models with leather seat covers, and I didn’t even like them. My very first car, a 1953 Mercury Monterey, 2-door hardtop, had beautiful rolled and pleated seats. They were hot as Hades in summer, and colder than a Witch’s what-a-call-IT in winter! For a difference in price of $2,000, I decided to forego that pleasure!
OH – after receiving Kelly prices on both my trade-in and my purchase (which my nephew just could NOT believe) --- and a monthly payment of $203 and change, I was a ‘Happy Camper’ to say the least.
OOPS! Almost forgot --- after driving around for a couple of weeks of sheer ecstacy, it finally dawned on me --- this is NOT a Plymouth, nor a Dodge, it is a CHRYSLER… Top O’ the Line, in my book!
Every time I click my remote and enter my PT Cruiser I am as proud as The Lone Ranger, and my Steed ‘SILVER’ spurts out like a ‘Silver Bullet.’

Have fun on your new set of wheels. The only PT Cruiser I have is a red MATCHBOX one. I also have several HUMMERS and a couple Slugbugs. All Matchbox, too. Oh, and my crutches, they're blue. LOL But they don't count. LOL
