The Knight
“With body, pride and honor, all wounded, still he rides on through the darkness. The rain driven sideways by the screaming wind is a relentless frontal assault. A thousand liquid spears add to the agony of each breath’s pull against the phantom rib that long ago had been ripped out of him. It was a bad night to be a knight.
In the hopeful first rays of morning, Adam, a name heavy with the significance of his quest, looks out upon a-dam that has long held back all that he has ever been afraid to feel, lest it carry him to ruin. He knows she’s there, waiting for him behind the wall. He knows further that to retrieve his sword from “The Lady of the man-made Lake” he will have to strike an equal alliance with her. The cold fear of it makes the previous night’s suffering appear as but a trifle.
Yet he knows it is the Great God Herself, who keeps pushing him forward up the steep and rocky mountain of his prejudices. Against his own ego’s will he watches in disbelief as each foot somehow falls into a natural rhythm that just now brings him to the very edge of his living lake of dread.
There she is, shimmering, ghost like just below the surface. He recognizes the face of Eve seen in a hundred thousand subconscious mirrors. Dropping to his knees, his rough hands gripped in wordless pleading, he groans out the primal truth. “I need you.”
The Truth Revealed Frees All. The sword pierces up from the lake. He lunges forward and grasps it, and in that instant The Lady of the Lake enters into him and he is whole again at last!”
As souls we are neither man nor woman. But here in creation, as you may have noticed, we’re required to wear the garb of male and female. And with that come a whole host of challenges, doesn’t it?!
Beyond the obvious physiological differences between the sexes are the mental, emotional and psychological differences. And for our discussion today we can distill these down to this one concept. Man has reason dominate in his nature and woman has feeling dominate.
Which in no way do I mean to imply that woman doesn’t reason and man doesn’t feel. We all know reasoning women and feeling men. But like I tried to express in my story today, in order for us to have an inner sense of completeness we must learn to embrace and integrate both qualities, reason and feeling.
And just like in a successful marriage where each person is loved, honored, respected, nurtured and appreciated as an equal, there also needs to be a successful relationship within ourselves that honors both reason and feeling as equal partners in guiding the ship of our lives on its journey through this challenging world.
And please understand, this is an internal integration. This is not suggesting that men be more outwardly feminine or that women should be more masculine. Rather, this is about coming to the realization that life is asking each of us to more fully develop and integrate both our reasoning faculties and our feeling nature by blending them into a balanced expression of who we really are as wise and loving souls. But even greater than this is the unexpected bonus that comes with the accomplishment of this great integration.
A parallel example taken from the physical world is like when you blend the right amounts of oxygen and hydrogen. You get a completely different, wonderful thing. You get water!
Likewise, when we can fully integrate both the rational and the feeling sides of our nature into a perfect balance we rise up to the next level in our spiritual evolution. We find that we have awakened the quality of intuition and its power of direct perception of truth.
And as ideal examples that model both the value and beauty of this illuminating integration I would offer you the names of Jesus, Krishna and Gautama the Buddha.
