Jon Michael Willey sent me one of those often forwarded e-mails about horse meat in burgers. That got me thinking about an old joke that I didn't make up but am relating here for your enjoyment.
It seems this restaurant inspector was quite suspicious of Joe's Diner. It was rumored that Joe served a fabulous rabbit stew that was quite meaty and a bit beefy. Rumored it was horsemeat. Everyone loved the stew and Joe had a booming business. The only way the inspector was going to get the bottom of it was to check the stew out himself.
The inspector seated himself on a stool at the counter, and when Joe came by, said, “I see that you have rabbit stew as a luncheon special, I think I'd like to try that.” Joe served him a big bowl of stew and the inspector proceeded to wolf it down.
After he had finished with a big smile on his face, the inspector called Joe over again and said, “This is mighty fine stew. I believe it's the best rabbit stew I've ever tasted. What's your secret ingredient?”
Joe replied. “Now it wouldn't be a secret if I told you, would it.”
“Ah, come on now, it tastes a bit rich. You wouldn't be putting horsemeat in it would you?” The inspector got one of those sly smiles he used when he knew he had a restaurant owner over a barrel.
Joe confessed. “Well, with the economy and all, I couldn't be selling rabbit stew at that price without putting a little horsemeat in it.”
your rabbit stew is delightful Ron, horse meat with rabbit dressing? Many cultures still enjoy horse meat. I mean as long as it does not buck or cause you to run wild, what could be bad for you? - I wish you peace and love my dear friend - Jon Michael
When I worked offshore as a cook I was sent horse meat for beef. I refused to cook it. Sent it back and about a month later I was fired for a frivolously thing.
Good one, Ron. Sounds like one of those Ausie 'meat pies' except that they had the gourme sense to put some tatters and carrots in with the 'meat' ... thanks. Jan
