I Am Not Broken

     I am one of 24 incredible women each writing a chapter of their personal journey of survival through adversity. This is a portion of my chapter (12), in the book called Sharing - an anthology of women's empowerment stories.
We are all participants in publishing of the book expected to be available December 2013. Each woman chose a charity to donate a portion of the proceeds to as our way of giving back and extending the sharing to our community.

When I was asked to write my life story several years ago, I wondered what I had to say that would serve another, not realizing that putting the words onto paper was an important part of my own healing. I wondered what I would call the story and, when I thought about my not so happy experiences as being stuck in the mud, I remembered a time when I was a litle girl and decided to make a pie for my mother out of playdough. Everything would have been fabulous had I not turned on the oven with the pies inside. They began to melt and the smell brought my mother running. The rest of the story was not one of joy and gratitude. All of a sudden I heard the words in my head - Mud Pies to Miracles. This would be my life story, taking the readers on a journey through six decades of remembering, releasing, and recovering from the experiences and lessons along the path.

There were many stops and starts, up and downs and forward to exactly where I am today. So many journeys and even now a bit painful for me as I peel back the layers like an onion. I was torn between letting go and pulling up my big girl panties, to knowing that deep within the dark corners of my soul there was hidden shrapnel from the batles of life, still
untended and showing up in my physical world today.
 
I am ready to take on these litle mud pies better now than a few years ago when denial and laughter got me through, but never really cleared the debris. This is the time for me to de-cluter on the inside and in doing so it is my desire that, through my own process of healing, somewhere around the world in the middle of the night, another will read my story and find their own healing with the understanding that we are never alone in our sadness or fear. We share a connection, and together can shine brightly as the dawn enters a new day and life can become more like a miracle than a mud pie. My story details may be unique to my life, but the feelings and emotions surrounding the events may feel very similar to yours.
 
When I was invited to write for this book, I was touched and honoured. This was an opportunity that came along at the perfect time, as everything does, and it was important for my wellbeing that I share a part of my life story on these pages. I asked my universal managers to guide me to a portion of the story that was important to share in these pages and that has brought me to this moment.
 
Some years ago, I read a few books writen by Maya Angelou. Her struggles and empowering words helped me on my journey. She wrote,
“I've learned that no mater what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow. I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. I've learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you'll miss them when they're gone from your life. I've learned that making a "living" is not the same thing as making a "life." I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance. I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back. I've learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I've learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one. I've learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back. I've learned that I still have a lot to learn. I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” – Maya Angelou
 
These words give me the strength to throw some things back and open my heart to the process of healing by sharing my journey and understanding the miracles that come through life’s lessons. I could go back to my childhood, teens or even my thirties, but I have been guided to open my heart to a time I packed in a box, thinking I had moved on from that place and survived. Indeed I have survived; however, the process of writing has me asking myself if I have truly looked at all the parts of this experience enough or has this been responsible for creating other events in my life through the years that followed.
 
Our beginnings do have an effect on our decisions and how we manage the results later in life. As I matured there was much forgiving and soul searching to do. Throughout the decades of my life one question kept coming to mind, “Why did I choose the parents I did?” I understand that everything happens for a reason and that would come clear to me years later.
 
Before I begin to unravel this particular incident, let me share with you a little about my family........
