The story of Darcy Morgan - in poetry and prose

...Darcy finished her meal and walked back to the B&B. Tomorrow she would need to start looking for a job and find herself a suitable place to live, otherwise her savings would not last long.

 Part 22

The sound of traffic was the first thing to register in Darcy’s mind. She opened her eyes and wondered where she was. Then she remembered. She slid out of bed and opened the curtains.

Below the window, morning rush

Dispels the shadows of the night

Busy lives buzz back and forth

And bring potential into sight

Today’s the day new life begins

Tests the metal, underpins

Resolve to make the most of chance

Seek out the lay of opportune

The little bird must find her perch

And write herself a brand new tune

The city pulses at her feet

She’s things to do and folks to meet

Darcy rifled through her case for something suitable to wear, took a long hot shower, dressed and then went down to breakfast.

After Scrambled eggs and coffee, and some directions from the B&B owner, Darcy went out into the city and began her search. She first registered with the employment agency, where they gave her a list of possible jobs to apply for. Then she went to register at the nearby accommodation agency and look at prices.

The list of jobs proved to be demoralising, since most of them had been filled. Those that weren’t, did not offer enough hours to earn Darcy enough money to live on. She could not afford to stay at the B&B forever. There had to be something out there, somewhere.

Take part in competition fierce

To sell one’s skills is no sure bet

Out of depth - A novice here

Homeless now and soon in debt

Birdsong reduced the fledgling hum

Must soar once more to overcome

Two months later, Darcy was finding that things were very different in the city. There were so many people all applying for the same post that everywhere she went she had to wait in line.

Darcy’s savings were dwindling fast and she was no nearer to finding her feet.

It's always tougher in the city. But those that stick it out usually do better than if they return or stayed in the country. Only you and Darcy know the outcome this point. I'm waiting…

I haven't been following your story line, but I have marveled at your talent in combining prose and poetry in telling it. Keep up the great work!
