Once upon a time she decided to become an author
Dear authors in the den,
Never give up.
I took a mail order writing course back in the 90s before computers. I had my Remington Rand high school typewriter pecking away at short stories and articles. I sent my work to publishing houses and magazines that were listed in that big Writer''s Market book. I had none published, and a few accepted at our local newspaper. I didn''t like rejection slips, but it''s just something you get used to, but if you like what you do, you keep doing it. I wrote so many notes after the year 2000 but never sent those to be published. The last Writer''s Market book I bought was in 2006 because I became familiar with the internet. Never give up on doing something you love.
After 14 years of having my writings published into ten books, my books are only now becoming mildly recognized. It takes time and sometimes forever to become an established author and hear people say, "Oh yes, I know her. I like her books."... OR... "Oh yes, I know her. I don''t like her books."
It''s will always be one or the other, and I''m used to rejections. But with everything in life, there comes rejection. So writers, get used to it. It comes with the job, and it is a job to make up a story that you think someone may want to read. No one sits down and just begins writing a manuscript and BOOM... it''s done. It takes planning and timing to get each character in the right place at the right time. But, it''s what I love doing.
So, never give up if writing is your passion. One day, it may pay off in more than one way for you. You may have one of your novels picked up by someone who knows someone who thinks it''s good enough to turn into a screenplay.
You just never know. So keep writing.

There are authors like J.K. Rowling who only scribbled on torn up paper bags while she was on breaks at work and yet would produce the best selling books that made into movies right on her first endeavor! Her books are very creative and filled with imagination. Yet, there are other authors who have been writing for a long time are not having this kind of recognition. It is almost like being at the right place and at the right time, but we all know skill and determination play a great part in us in becoming an author. You are right! One should never give up.
The world is advancing and every generation is different in compared to the last, and its taste in reading literature is different. Now the Romance Authors seem to have taken to a new height because of the Fifty Shades of Grey (I have not even read this book. Not interested in it at all). There are many authors now writing romance novels. Some would even discipline themselves to write a few thousand words every evening just so they would have an ebook out for sale. They produce ebooks in mass quantities to sell to the public. To me, these are only "booksellers". They are not authors.
In this generation, there are also same-sex romance books as well, which seem to have suddenly sprung into the spotlight. This would take a special kind of readers to read them.
However, there are some older authors who are so set in their very own style of writings and would not conform to anything new from other authors. We must be more open to changes and accept new things. The world is changing, and we must also advance ourselves with the changes.

With the computer and the Internet it is very easy to get into writing, and even publishing, these days. The traditional way of having a manuscript accepted by a publisher and then carefully edited before publishing, is nearly gone. Cream rises to the top. Ninety percent of those wishing to be an author and self publish their books will never earn enough to pay for their hobby. And only a very small fraction, perhaps 2%, will become famous enough to be well-known.
For the rest of us, it is the satisfaction of being published and read, if only on the Internet. Our books, whether hardcover or paperback, will remain around for our children and other friends and relatives to read and admire for many years to come.
