Reminds me of how I recently obliterated a spider's web because it was interfering with people coming to my door. I felt a little sad about it. The spider was only doing what spiders are supposed to do.
I recall that Thoreau studied ants activity like you were. And it is ironic that you had to experience the tragedy of their demise. I think the lesson here is that we should be careful of killing insects because they form the foundation of our food chain and by trying to eradicate them we may be eradicating ourselves.
Recently I got tired of the sugar ants getting into my juice and lunch before noon, so my partner put out a little sweet killing juice that I understand they took back to their mound outside the house so they all could die. It was probably a good thing I didn't watch the massacre. I have watched several documentaries about how Jim Jones dispatched his ant colony the same way in Guyana.
