I have made it a point to decide to comment on almost every new book, story, article and poem posted every day here on AD. It takes some time, and I often rush my answer, but find that I get about 90% positive feedback and 10% negative.
By making comments when few or no others do, an author begins to feel that their writing is worthwhile. And it's not necessary to give false praise to make a connection.
