What I did the night John Lennon died. Life was wild that night.
It was the night John Lennon died. There was a film at the theater playing the Beatles rooftop concert and Paul McCartney's Rock Show. There were also some interview clips of Lennon. My friend Sue and I attended, and smuggled a sixpack of beer into the auditorium. I liked watching the show and the beer was going down smooth. We both got our fill of Labatts. We laughed a lot, at John Lennon mostly. He was so ugly he looked like a horse. His nose was falling apart due to so much cocaine use, Sue explained.
When the drama was over, we went to a bar that was only a few blocks from my street. Although we were both underage, we had no trouble getting in. Back then they rarely proofed anyone, and I had my older sister's ID in my wallet just in case. We were kids.
There were no women in the bar other than Sue and me. The crowd of men, all drunk and horny, were grabbing me everywhere they could get their hands on. I was so drunk myself I allowed it. In no time, every one of them was asking me if they could give me a ride home. I didn't accept a ride from anyone, but they continued to pursue me. The men were getting crazier. There would have been a fight. Or worse, I would have found myself on a pool table. But Sue clutched my arm and pulled me out of the bar.
She drove me the 3 1/2 blocks home. She and I were not clear-headed. But we started saying to each other, "Men are a bunch of pigs, bunch of fucking pigs, fucking pigs." I turned my head to reach for a cigarette. Sue, catching me completely off guard, grabbed my head and kissed me.
Hi Ron. Yes, I agree that Lennon was a beautiful person. I'm just going to lay down a different story other than the religious one. First, I did not know that Mark David Chapman was from Hawaii. I do know that he was obsessed with the book, "The Catcher in The Rye." There are theories relating to that. And he was a religious man, at least in prison. I know a forensic psychiatrist that was deeply involved with Chapman, on a therapeutic level, at Attica where she worked and he resided. I asked her numerous times about the situation with Chapman, but she didn't answer me. I think this may have been due to a confidentiality thing. Anyway, after he shot and killed Lennon, he sat, waited, and read Catcher in the Rye until the police came. I think the entire incident is kind of foggy in the public eye. There are many different theories, but I don't bother with them much. It would be great if my friend told me more than she has. R.
You certainly were living dangerously. About a month before, I recall reading an interview with John Lennon in Playboy. It was clear that John was an atheist can be explained why wrote Imagine. His killer was a Jesus freak living in Hawaii. I believe that he read the article or you heard about the article through his zealous religious friends and decided something no handedly about John Lennon's straying from the gospel of Christianity. In other words, he felt empowered to carry out God's will.
There is a lesson in this for every zealous Christian. And I'm glad you wrote this story about your night out to remind me of it. All men may be pigs, but I find them mostly in cheap bars looking for cheap women. John Lennon may have been ugly, but he was a beautiful person. And would lay a hand on anyone who he felt was traveling the wrong route.
