Well, it's crucial if you're me. I'm still in shock. Like, what is the universe trying to tell me? Was it really predetermined that I would live my life minus my left pinky?
If you haven't read my story, Pinkies Are Expensive, which is about how I lost it, then I suggest you do. It's kind of a prerequisite for this story, and it's not monetized either. It will also prepare you for the other image you can see here. There will be a link back to this story.
Okay, so, I live in an apartment building. It's not a very nice place to live, but for the most part, I've never had any trouble with my neighbors. Just the vagrants that frequent this place.
I was in the elevator on my way to check the mail. I've been waiting for my Revolut debit card to arrive, which is three days late so far.
One of my neighbors who works at Jiffy Lube got onto the elevator one floor down. We didn't speak, but nodded and rode to the first floor in silence. He was headed to the parking garage in the basement.
As the elevator got to the first floor, the slow door began to open and I began to step forward to exit, but I turned my head to say, "Have a good one." to the Jiffy Lube employee.
The moment I turned my head back I was attacked by a large German Shepherd. A tiny blonde woman struggled to hold him back as he managed to get a hold of my sweatshirt.
I felt the pressure of his teeth on my missing pinky nub as my hand was in that pocket at the time. I flinched and I think I backed away as the woman pulled the dog away and the door slowly closed; the dog barking loudly the whole time. I can still feel a mild pain in my nub. Probably like a 0.01 on the pain scale, but it's there and it's throbbing still.
After being bit the first time, I've made it a point to better understand their behavior, however, there was almost no time to react. If I wasn't already missing that pinky, I would be in the hospital right now, most likely with no left pinky.
Oh, and that matchbook? It wasn't in the same pocket as my hand. This sweatshirt has two large pockets on the inside, which is where that was. It came out because that pocket actually goes in front of the other, meaning that that tooth mark would've been in my pinky.
It reminds me of that movie where the coin in the guy's pocket saves him from getting shot. I want to say it was that western with Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, and Leonardo DiCaprio, but I can't think of it's name.
Anyways, this incident has shook me to the core. I mean, what are the odds that my missing pinky would save me from that situation. Looking at the inside of the sweatshirt, I can see a bit of damage from where his bottom teeth grabbed a hold. He definitely would've had my pinky in his mouth.
And, no, I don't believe in coincidences. To me, this was definitely fate playing a nasty wild card. I still feel a bit shaky, and that's after putting a bit of CBD oil behind my ears. I would normally smoke some weed for this, but we're out right now. The end of the month is always hard for us.
In any case, I'm not using the elevator anymore. That one has been getting more use as the one on the other side has been broken for at least a month now. Like I said, this is not a great place to live.
So, how was your leap day?

The Empire State Building proves that lightning can strike place at the same place. I got back to the 1988 incident where that dog took your finger after attacking 6 other people and you recovered from that so well. Real stories are better than fictional ones.
I was attacked by two German shepherds. The first when I went to visit a friend who was recovering from surgery on his intestines. When I opened the door to his basement apartment, his German Shepherd, that he claimed was trained to attack, ran from him with him yelling, jumped up on me and licked my face in friendship. He was mightily relieved and so was I.
The second time, I was visiting my friends in California and we had gone to the beach. Coming back over the mountain range, we stopped at a gas station that was no longer in business, because I had to urinate badly. The restroom door on the side of the building was locked, so I went out back where I could see clotheslines in the dark night I bent down to go under one and a German Shepherd was at my face! I yelled as loud as I could, "Hey!" And the dog stopped in mid attack and backed off. So did I and didn't have to go anymore. When I got back to the car and told my friend, he laughed hysterically. It might've been a lot different if that dog had grabbed my face.
