One of the most asked questions when I give a book review of 1066 The Healer and 1066 Knight Haralde, especially from young people, is what does it take to write a book? Do you need experience? My answer is yes, some experience of life, of living helps. Here is my life experience:
Served gourmet food specifically requested by a wealthy Egyptian grandfather to his family and grandchildren; owned a bed and breakfast; captained a sail boat manufactured in Torku, Finland through the Bahamian Archipelago; walked the mountain uplands of Jamaica where the best ganja in the world is grown, and negotiated for refreshments; caught and served up a northern walleye diner to a hunting party in a floating motor home in Northern Ontario; won a Canadian national outdoor writing award; organized a convention in my home town for one of the oldest writing guilds in Canada; walked Offa’s Dyke, a turf wall erected by a Welsh king to protect King Arthur’s ancient Bretons against invading Saxons, Alans and Norsemen and raised two Ontario daughters who I took to the seashore of British Columbia to hear them explode: “Daddy! It’s salty!”. This I know. What I don’t know of my life is what my readers will judge of my creativity in my books.
