A girl's quest to hunt down and kill the man who led a raid on a Cheyenne village killing women and children including her mother.
After being raised by her adoptive Cheyenne father Tall Bull and taught to hunt, shoot and kill for the sole purpose of seeking revenge for the murder of her mother, Ruth, whose Cheyenne name is Archisha, sets out to hunt down her mother's killers.
Her quest for vengeance takes years and her journey covers thousands of miles of often, inhospitable terrain as well as some of the wildest towns in the west where she makes friends and enemies in equal proportions.
Ruth is tall, statuesque and beautiful but she has a murderous streak and a killer's instinct, which during her travels she finds that she needs both in order to survive the perils into which her journey leads her.
The story of a girl's quest to exact bloody revenge on the man who led an army of killers against innocent women and children and wiped out an entire Cheyenne village including her own mother who's only sin was trying to protect a Cheyenne child from the killers' bullets.
After many adventures and much soul searching, she eventually finds the man she is seeking and her search finally comes to a violent and tragic conclusion.
Excerpt
The cabin consisted of one big room where they cooked and ate and a small, single bedroom which was given to Ruth whilst he bedded down in a small, buffalo skin lodge close to the cabin. In the winter if the snow became too severe, he bedded down in the main room. Ruth loved having her own private space and though the room was very small with just a cot in the corner where she slept, it was hers. In the past she had always shared a bedroom with her sister Sarah and so there had been no secrets between them. She loved the arrangement and though she missed her mother and sister, she felt that she needed no one else but Tall Bull.
That was to change when just after her twelfth birthday, she began to menstruate. Fortunately, she had been forewarned about what to expect and how to deal with it, by her mother. Her sister too had been a good source of knowledge on the subject living and sleeping as they had in close proximity to each other. However, that was the one time during her time in the hills with Tall Bull, when she would have preferred to have a woman to turn to. She had gone to him with many problems, but this particular one she kept to herself.
As the months passed, the girl learned to cope with the monthly inconvenience as she had with any problem that had come up and apart from being a little grumpy during those periods, she simply took it in her stride.
By the time her sixteenth birthday came around, she was running things. There was nothing left for her to learn. She had become as skilled as Tall Bull in everything he had taught her and even more skilled in what she had taught herself. She had grown tall, almost as tall as he was and her athleticism and strength would have been incredible for a boy of that age, but for a girl, they were absolutely astonishing.
By that time she was making more and more hunting trips alone, often travelling many miles, either on foot or horseback. At first Tall Bull had been a little wary about allowing her to venture out into the wilderness alone. But as time passed he became less anxious about her trips knowing how formidable she could be should she be accosted or be in any kind of danger and more anxious about her becoming a woman with a good chance that she might soon want to go her own way.
For the past four years or so she had never mentioned the death of her mother or wanting revenge on the men who had killed her, so naturally, he assumed that she had cooled on the idea and would sooner or later feel the need to go back to civilisation to mix with people of her own kind and age. When that happened, he knew he would miss her like hell, it would be like losing a part of him even though she had proved to be the biggest pain in the butt on many occasions.
Not long before she became seventeen, Ruth travelled further than she had ever ventured alone and consequently, put herself in great peril.
