Gazing down into the woman's soft blue eyes, Reverend Douglas Cook felt a sudden surge of hope. Though he didn't understand why, he knew without a doubt that she was someone he wanted - no, needed - to know better.
But after he left Violet Murphy to mingle with the other church parishioners, an unwelcome thought crept into Douglas's mind: Lilianne... But she's out of my life forever, he reassured himself. After all, she ended our engagement months ago and I haven't heard from her since. I'm sure she has found someone else; in fact, it is very likely she's engaged again. Surely someone like Lilianne won't be without a beau for long.
