Welcome Home “Little Drop “
Out in the beautiful blue ocean of eternity lived a happy little drop of water. When the tide went in so did he. When big boats sailed over, he helped lift them. When kids splashed and played, he would tickle their nose and make them laugh. Little Drop was part of whatever happened in the big blue sea. He was part of something much bigger then his “little drop” self.
One dark, stormy night, a blustery storm churned the big blue sea. Little Drop was pushed here and there. He was pulled up and down. The wind howled and blew. The waves crashed and grew. Suddenly, a giant wave plucked Little Drop up and out of the ocean. He was tossed high into the air, flying through the dark moonless night Little Drop felt very alone and scared.
After the storm passed, the light of day brightened the sky. Little Drop found himself perched on the leaf of a coconut tree. Off in the distance he could see the beautiful blue ocean. When he had been part of the sea, he had always gone with the flow. Now he was alone. For the first time he would have to make choices. Whatever happened next, would be up to him. Little Drop began thinking about his new situation. He could hear the waves and see the ocean. Part of him longed to be back in that comfortable, safe place. Another part of him was very excited. A whole new world had opened up to him. A world, where his choices, would determine his fate.
The sun was extremely hot that day. There was no cool breeze. The air was still. Little Drop began to feel strange, almost lighter than air. When he looked down he noticed he was no longer sitting on the leaf. He had begun to float gently upwards. When he looked to his right he saw other drops rising into the sky. The same thing was happening when he looked to his left. Little Drop was confused and frustrated. He was just getting used to the idea of being in control of things. This was not what he had planned! He wiggled and hollered, shouted and shook but nothing changed. Little Drop asked, “Hey, what’s going on around here?” A big drop said, “Don’t worry, it’s called evaporation, you’ll be fine.”
When his journey came to an end he was inside a puffy white cloud. There were many other drops there. He listened to all their stories. One drop had been dew on a rose petal, another, a drop in a waterfall, the next, a tear on a baby’s cheek. Each one had a different experience. Little Drop noticed more and more drops arriving. The fluffy white cloud started to feel crowded. It was turning gray. The weight of all the drops had made the cloud heavy with water. With a clap of thunder and a flash of lightening, the cloud burst! Once again Little Drop was off on a new adventure. He, and the other drops were heading towards the earth. “I wonder where I’ll end up this time?” he thought.
The wind had blown the cloud he was on far to the north. He was no longer near the ocean, it was nowhere in sight. As Little Drop fell through the sky he noticed it was getting very cold. He was starting to feel light and fluffy, he was turning white. He didn’t feel like he was falling anymore, now he was floating. The other raindrops had changed too. Every one of them had turned into a snowflake! Each one was a different shape, each one unique. “Isn’t this interesting?” thought Little Drop. Each of us is made from the same stuff but look how different we are! Gently, they floated to earth. The little flakes landed one by one. Some of them formed a sparkling white blanket of snow. How beautiful they looked covering the ground. Other flakes had landed on the branches of trees. Little Drop landed near the edge of a frozen lake. He went to sleep wondering what tomorrow would bring.
Little Drop awoke to the sound of children laughing. He saw kids whizzing by on ice skates. A little girl in a snowsuit and mittens, reached down and scooped him up. Little Drop was part of a snowball, hurtling through the air. Splat! He landed on the back of a boy skating on the frozen lake. The boy laughed when he saw his little sister giggling by the shore. “Good Shot,” he shouted,” I’m gonna get you! Better watch out!” She laughed and laughed and hid behind a tree. Little Drop was very happy that he had been part of their fun. When he fell off the boys back, he landed on the frozen lake. He would become part of the ice until winter passed.
During the long winter, Little Drop had lots of time to think. How scared he had been when tossed from the ocean, how alone he had felt. Then he evaporated. What a change that had been! He thought of the other drops and what they had been through. Although he missed the comfort of the ocean, he knew everything would be okay if he just did his best in each moment.
The warm days of spring arrived and the icy lake began to melt. Little Drop was floating freely, along with the other drops. The lake water trickled gently into a stream. As the stream widened it began to flow more quickly. Soon the stream became a river that ran over mountains. One day he had even been part of a beautiful waterfall! Little Drop was enjoying all the new experiences.
Being part of the big river reminded him of his home, what it felt like to be part of something bigger then himself. Through all the changes, evaporation, raindrop, snowflake and snowball, Little Drop had done his best. Even in a frozen lake, a stream, a river and a waterfall, he had learned to accept the changes. Struggling against them wouldn’t help. How he reacted to the change, was what mattered. He learned that nothing ever stays the same, and that’s okay. Change is how we learn and grow. The important thing is to do your best in every situation.
One day the river felt a little different. It tasted different too. Little Drop heard a familiar sound. It was the sound of waves! The river was flowing back into the ocean! As the river met the sea he could feel the embrace of the warm salty water, it seemed to say, “Welcome home Little Drop.” His little drop heart had never forgotten the big blue sea. He always knew he was part of something much bigger. Wherever he was or what ever he looked like, he knew, he would always be part of the perfect ocean of eternity.
