As I sat by my daughter’s bed, not wanting to move, I secretly prayed for a miracle to happen, but in my heart of hearts I knew that God would not be granting any miracles today. Somehow I had to accept that it wouldn’t be long before I finally had to say goodbye to my beloved daughter forever.
The hospital had become a familiar place, a second home during the last 20 months. The sounds and smells had become second nature and the nursing staff had become like extended members of our own family. The nurses came on a regular basis checking Karina’s vital signs; I sat there scanning the expressions on their faces in the faint hope that there had been a change for the better. But I knew deep down that this was not to have a happy ending.
With trepidation, friends and family came to say goodbye to the teenager who I had named Mini the Minx because of her mischievous ways. They didn’t know what to expect. Several of her friends left gifts of jewellery for Karina to take with her on her next journey. It broke my heart to see them leave in tears, their heads hung low.
Karina began having further seizures. They were becoming so frequent now, each longer than the last. Many different emotions began penetrating my mind and I wondered when would it end? Why did this have to happen to us? My thoughts began to turn to all of the bad people in the world, who never have to go through what we were experiencing. As my mind began to fill with all of these feeling, I began to despise them so much. Karina would never have hurt anyone and she didn’t deserve this.
