Excerpt My parents knew there was something wrong because I was late for dinner at their home, and I was never late. They immediately walked to the 86th Street Car Service, where my husband Lasz worked, and told him that there was something wrong with me. When they arrived at our apartment, they found me in bed on a pool of urine. They phoned the doctor and he thought I was on drugs, but my folks reassured him I was not. My brothers were contacted. One brother drove me to Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn while the other held me. It took a long time to get admitted to the ER. Angelo was very disturbed and punched his fist through the hospital wall (Anthony told me this). My brother Anthony remained calm, but wanted to beat the hell out of my hubby. The only reason he didn’t was because he didn’t want me to go through any more stress when I got out of the hospital. I was finally admitted. The year was 1977. I was diagnosed with manic depression. I stayed in the hospital for three weeks. My parents were mortified. They and Lasz were still communicating, but Mom and Dad wanted to make sure all the bills were paid. Dad asked. Lasz replied, “They might not have been. It’s none of your business.” My folks didn’t deserve that kind of answer. After I got out of the hospital, I went to live with Mom and Dad. My soon-to-be ex-husband told my doctor we were getting a divorce. My family encouraged me to go ahead with it. Lasz checked with my doctor to determine if he should leave me and was told that if he didn’t, I would never be the girl I’d been before. That summer, he filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. He always knew that the courts would not file charges for going bankrupt. With this in mind, we were divorced in 1978.
