He flies at night, cloaked by the darkness, fishing the seas for his food and haunting the city dump for his books and magazines. And he just wants to be left alone….. And then one night, she dropped in; unexpected and unwanted. Fellow lab escapee Polly Proper is cunning and cute with the ability to spin a web like any spider. And she’s got designs on Harper’s warehouse; determined to run him off using her own curious abilities. The result is a battle of wits with control over the warehouse at stake. But the lab that created them both wants them back for a very ominous and dark purpose; one that threatens us all. Propinquity is tale of human connections and deep intrigue; a romantic story that soars on the wings of love, but unblinkingly dives into the depths of human depravity. It’s a story that explores the value of life, love and what it really means to be human

Was he still out there?
It wasn't the cold chilling Polly's blood. She stayed under the covers, but remained tense, unable to sleep. A few times she started to relax and nod off, but a soft thump or crack from the building settling caused her small body to tense up and return to full alert. There was a brisk wind out there, howling down the alleyways between the buildings every now and again, clearly not of utility to her problem.
The candles stayed lit, keeping the area around the hot stove sepia-toned. Some roasting wood shifted softly in the tinderbox, deep in the belly of the stove. For the last week, she had been sleeping in a box of darkness and felt nothing, other than concern for what Harper might try next to extricate her. Now, she lay on a thin mattress on the floor near the firewall, alone and feeling it to her knucklebones.
With a sigh, she pulled the covers up closer to her face and tossed into her side, trying to find a comfortable place. Sleep was going to be a problem tonight. Insomnia was a rare bird in her night sky: at least since her escape.
Up in the dark rafters, Montgomery let out a startled screech and fluttered his feathers.
Her heart started to pound. But she told herself that birds are funny creatures. Possibly he had a nightmare......
Something out there went “plop.”
Her gut synched up. She sat up, heart racing. She tried not to think how much that sounded like a pair of rubber soles hitting the floor out there. Her blood was getting cold and she was already trembling. Out there in the dark, something was rustling. God, how she hoped it was the bird settling down, though it seemed to coming from somewhere much lower than the ceiling. The stove, the sideboard and the procession of bookshelves that formed the aisle and the kitchen nook at the end of it also blocked her view of the rest of the warehouse. At this point, hopeful conjecture was all she do for herself.
And then she heard what sounded like footsteps.
“Harper?” she called out hopefully.
There was no answer. But the footsteps stopped.
Truly creeped out, looked around the kitchen area for a potential weapon. “Harper, please tell me that's you,” she whimpered..
Whatever it was, it had resumed walking toward the mouth of the aisle.
She spotted some kitchen knives atop the counter next to the stove. Leaping from her mat, she grabbed an especially nasty looking carving knife with a black handle and held it tightly, pointing at the blind outlet at the end of the corridor. The footsteps sped up, pausing behind the stove.
Polly's heart was thudding. She tightened her grip on the knife, sweat pouring down her face and shoulders despite the cold air. First came the shadow, stretching beyond the cupboard and directly onto the floor before her. And then came its face......
It was Montgomery. The bird had dropped down from the dark air to the concrete of the corridor before her. Monty swiveled his head and glared at her.
She exhaled, shoulders slumping. “Oh....it's you,” she whispered, lowering the knife. “Ya scared me, ya beastie,” she scolded the pelican. She patted her still pounding heart.
Montgomery waddled away toward the firewall, taking flight with a flurry of feathers...hurrying because something was chasing him.
Polly screamed. The knife fell to the floor with a soft clatter, wrists rubbed desperately.
The man charged down the corridor at her.
Polly threw a sticky thread straight up, blindly hoping that it would catch. To her amazement, it stuck to the firewall and she tried to scramble up the line.
A big hand grabbed her small ankle just before she could get away. She screamed and kicked his face with her small foot. “Harper,” she shrieked, feeling her web strand slipping off the wall.
The clamping hot hand on her twiggy ankle yanked hard and flung her back down to the hard floor. Polly rolled several feet across the floor, over her bedding and past the stove like a dark-haired log.
The bald goon started toward her bloodied body.
Polly came to a rest twenty feet away, chin and knees on the floor, rear end in the air, trying to lift her dazed head. Instead, she slumped over onto her side. Blood was already running down into her bleary eyes. A double image of two tree-trunk like legs in black trousers sauntering toward her filled her skull, but the power to move was gone......
