After Sniffer, Richard's hound dog, saves a girl from drowning, the dog is featured on front page of the newspaper, and becomes noted as the Hero Dog of Norphlet.
However, dognappers grab up Sniffer in downtown Norphlet, and roar away. A couple of days later, a ransom note is nailed to the Mayor's door threatening to kill Sniffer, if the ransom is not paid.
Richard and his best friend John Clayton are determined to solve the dognapping, and they come up with where they believe Sniffer is being held. It's a nearby town, and the hitchhike there and .....well, you will have to read the book to find out how they solve the dognapping case.

This book is about an Arkansas boy in the 7th grade, his dog, Sniffer, and life in the little town of Norphlet in the South Arkansas-America countryside during n WWII. For old guys like me, it was right out of my childhood. But for kids who grew up in the city or in the country - this story is just sheer FUN! It is full of the 'critters' of the Arkansas countryside- two legged and four legged and belly sliders. It is a delightful two hour read (two hours because you have to stop every few pages to read something out loud to your spouse!). I've read all Richard Mason's other dozen books. This is a great addition!
