All Ophelia ever wanted when she was a child was to belong to a family. The orphan finally got her wish, but bliss soon turned to terror as she saw behind the masks her foster parents had worn to be able to adopt her.
Living in fear of them, Ophelia's only friend was the outside girl, who made promises of freedom and happiness. However, Ophelia soon felt the sting of betrayal for the second time as she realized that the outside girl wasn't a friend at all, but a manipulative enemy.
After finding out that she was truly alone, her goal was to live a normal life; that was all she wanted. For some people, though, normalcy is far away, and nothing can bring it closer.
Even after finally achieving her goal, it was once again shattered and taken away...by herself.

He grabbed her in her sleep like a big, ugly ogre. She hated when he touched her; his hands were big and clumsy, and calloused to no end. She didn't even open her eyes; she'd rather not be here. She felt him grab her hand and force it to touch him... she almost pulled it away, but remembered what happened last time. Her eye still hurt. She was very still, thinking that maybe if he thought she was asleep, he'd leave her alone... of course not. He was drunk. He always got what he wanted from her, never without hurting her.

Ophelia woke up feeling out of place in herself. her mind was fully awake, but her body refused to move... she didn't know where she was. The room around her was her own, the same she'd been in for seven years, but she didn't feel comfortable. She tried to look around, and all she could make out in the darkness were the giant words spelled out on the wall in Polaroid snapshots: ALONE. EMPTY. LOST. And, on the final wall, a giant question mark.
In there years she'd spent here, she'd learned that the hospital had a system. The more strange things she did, the more progress they said she was making, which meant she would get out sooner. She hated it there; not as much as she hated certain other aspects of her life, but she certainly didn't like it. It was as though they had taken all the pain in the world and locked it up in this one building, and sometimes, Ophelia felt overwhelmed by all the strange and terrible emotions she detected here.
