Empty Nest
So I started this blog as my own little detox program. I’ve heard that journaling is supposed to be relaxing, you know? Like getting your issues out on paper (or computer screen) keeps you from brooding on them. In the last few days I’ve figured out two things.
First, it doesn’t help much, although I enjoy reading your posts. How am I supposed to keep my mind off this empty nest thing when the house is so damned quiet?
Second, my life is a little dry. Maybe that’s my problem. I entertain myself by working all day. My friend Cara says I need to get a social life. So does my daughter. Unfortunately for me, “social life” seems to mean “dating.” Yuk. What’s up with that? I dated right after the divorce twelve years ago. There’s a reason why I never tried it again.
Here’s a little piece of information about me that might help you understand. I’m a realist. And let’s face it. I’m 42. I’m too old to date. At my age, any guy worth having is already married. Is that cynical of me? Probably. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t true. All the stable, steady ones were snatched up years ago.
But Cara wants to torture me by setting me up on a month’s worth of BLIND DATES. As if dating at my age isn’t bad enough. Blind dates are a subcategory of dating that is ten times worse. And this is not really to better my existence in any way -- she only wants to do this because she’s bored (another sufferer of the dreaded empty nest syndrome – see my last post).
