A wonderful message for young children. Each page offers a beautiful illustration of the poem format of the story.

As a former teacher and current dog trainer working with children training the family pet and in pet therapy service, I happily recommend this book. It makes me smile. It would make a good addition to your child’s library and I believe the message would also be very beneficial for kids at school and daycare. The book should also be added to reading programs where kids read to therapy dogs.

"Bernice," by Rob Adamowski of Portland, is a lovely tale about coming to terms with being misunderstood. Bernice is a huge Newfoundland who is mistaken for a bear on every walk: at the beach, in the mountains, or at the park. Like children, "She doesn't like being called something she's not. It makes Bernice sad and it happens a lot." Bernice's "people parents" share several facts about bears, and Bernice realizes that bears really are quite amazing. Being out for a romp and hearing, "Oh my gosh it's a bear!" isn't so bad.

Illustrator Kellee Beaudry, also from the Portland area, uses thick, brilliant brushstrokes in gold, crimson and cobalt, creating a dog and bear that are not scary. Instead they are fluffy, inviting compassion and rubs behind the ears.

My husband and I are huge Newfoundland dog lovers. When I saw this book I knew I had to add it to our collection. I first bought the digital version, because frankly I didn't have the patience to wait for the print copy to arrive in the mail.

I bought the printed copy as a gift for my husband and our future daughter who will be coming home from China later this year. I know they will read and re-read this beautiful story together many times over the years. I think this will be a perfect story for our child, who like Bernice in the story, may feel different at times from the other children. I think it sends a positive message that different is not just ok, it can really be quite wonderful! My husband loved the gift. He ooohhhhed and aaahhhed over the stunning watercolor art and he was deeply touched by the sweet story. The subtitle of the book "Oh my gosh, it's a bear!" is a line we have heard literally hundreds (if not thousands) of times when we take our Newfs out in public.

This is now in my top five picks for all children's books. Buy it! I promise you won't be disappointed.
