After reading a diary from their graduation year of 1965, three high school BBFs, June, Kiki and Peggy, decide that they owe those patient, long-suffering boyfriends a good ole roll in the hay, make a pact (just like in high school) and set out to accomplish just that in Sandra Nachlinger and Sandra Allen’s funny, sexy, and poignant book, I.O.U. Sex.
The girls have weathered a lot of life since they last saw their sweethearts and have learned some hard lessons. The pact, and a couple more of life’s unexpected curve balls, brings them to a deeper understanding of themselves and each other that allows them to move forward and embrace their lives as they were meant to be.
Though the premise sounds terribly funny, and the humor of the situations run throughout the book, what captured the reader in me was the relationship of the three women. Even though the book is subtitled: A Baby Boomer Romance, the women in the book and their goals and dreams are timeless. Everyone has that one boyfriend in high school, the one who got away, who you’d love to track down and reminisce with, even if no sex was involved. Every reader has dreams that didn’t quite come true, and hopefully friends to share that loss with. The friendship between the three women that shines throughout this book is the friendship I certainly wish I’d had.
The women’s romances, skillfully intertwined with their personal growth stories, also touched me on a deep level. Because there is always that one man you think of and say, “What if…” June, Kiki, and Peggy all get to experience the thrill of what might have been. And the reader is fortunate enough to be taken right along with them.
June, Kiki, and Peggy each contact their former sweethearts. All three have secrets to keep from their men and all of them confront obstacles in keeping their pact. Do they all go through with it? Can each one put paid to her account by the end of the book? Or was this just another one of Kiki’s hair-brained schemes? I.O.U. Sex offers the answers in a funny, sexy and thoroughly entertaining read.

My Review:
I'm just going to get right into it and tell you that I adored this book. It was witty, smart, and unique in a way that kept me hooked right up until the end.
I like the way each of the three women's story was told and how they were interwoven together. Each chapter gave a different piece of each of their stories. I loved how it was three stories, but because of the shared history and love between characters, it was also one story.
The three friends, June, Peggy, and Kiki, compliment each other. Each one offers something unique to the dynamic friendship. Peggy stands at one end of the spectrum with a sweet, endearing, almost naive sort of personality. Kiki is her complete opposite, with her smart mouth and fiery temperament. It is June that unites them, a blend of both personalities with her own dose of realism that, in my mind, makes her the most realistic and grounded character in the book. I liked that these ladies were not in the first blossom of youth, each of them had seen their share of love and heartbreak since leaving high school. It was fun to see these three girls get their groove back and get their second chances at love.
Each love story has its own flavor, and each romance blossoms in its own way. June learns that she can't outrun her past when faced with her old high school boyfriend, and loose ends left years ago will need to be tied before she and Denny can find their happy ending. Kiki learns that her fantasy of hooking up with Greg, high school ex, won't exactly play out as she planned; she finds herself embroiled in an explosive scandal in the process and finds love in the most unlikely of places. The beaten-down and overweight Peggy undergoes a drastic transformation as well as a journey to self-discovery on her road to love. Her arc in the story will have you in tears as she and Mark reunite and rekindle their high school romance and as Peggy learns to finally love herself.
What I loved most about this book was how it changed my expectations. The first chapter made me think I was in for a sexy romantic comedy. And while the book brought plenty of heat and lots of laughs, it also offered more than I expected. There are a lot of tender and heartfelt moments, and some serious issues are touched on. In the end though, it's all smiles and the ending to each story is neat and satisfying.
