Excerpt

Prologue

There I was; recently divorced, battered from my reemergence on the dating scene, and totally broken-hearted. After over a decade…wait, scratch that…a lifetime of bouncing from relationship to relationship, guy to guy, and never fully comprehending what I was doing wrong, I found myself truly alone for the first time. No white knight was coming to rescue me. (Just a bunch of married weirdos I’d reconnected with on Facebook.) No Prince Charming was on the horizon. (Just a bunch of match.com freaks.) My fairy tale ending seemed highly unlikely.

Where was Disney when I needed it?!?

Even though I was the thinnest I’d been since my early twenties (mostly from lack of appetite) and my hair was longer than it had ever been, I could not have felt uglier. My self-esteem was so shot from all of the dating disasters I’d experienced; you’d have thought I was a hunchback with a mono-brow. It was most definitely a low point in this girl’s life, let me tell you.

So I decided to write about it. I wrote about all my bad dates, all the crappy guys who’d treated me poorly, all the missteps and mistakes I’d made since my divorce. I started a blog called “Just Another Bad Guy” which I shared with a few of my closest friends. I wrote my stories. I wrote my single girlfriends’ stories. I wrote and wrote and wrote. And as I wrote, I started to laugh. (Laughter is never a bad thing in times of crisis.) And more importantly, I started to learn. Patterns emerged and I was able to see the things I was doing wrong; how badly I kept messing up my love life.

The blog that started off as a place to vent, eventually morphed into “Jenn X: 30Something & Single.” And that’s where my readers come in. After I went public with my writing and started spouting my theories on relationships, I began to receive questions from women all over the globe. Even though thousands of miles separated us, we were all searching to find a solid relationship with a man who treated us well. We really weren’t so different after all! And the beauty of it is that what works for relationships in the United States works in every other part of the world as well. I take great comfort in that. And I feel a very special bond with my sisters everywhere.

It still surprised me how my “Relationship Advice” and “Reader’s Question” posts resonated with the women who were reading them. I figured what I had to say was really nothing more than common knowledge and common sense. And – at the end of the day – I think that’s true. I think we all know, deep inside, how we are supposed to conduct ourselves in relationships. I think we know what works and what doesn’t work with men. I believe that women are given an amazing intuition and a real sixth sense when it comes to matters of the heart.

Ever notice how you can give your girlfriends great advice about their love lives, but when it comes to applying it yourself…not so much? You’re not alone. We’ll be the first to tell our girls to dump that out-of-work, cheating bastard’s ass, but if it’s our guy who’s no good? That makes things a lot harder, doesn’t it?

So that’s where I come in. Consider me your best girlfriend, your dating coach, and your champion. I’m here to give it to you straight and tell you exactly what you need to be doing to find, attract, and keep that great guy. I’m going to challenge you to do things that might be completely different from what you’ve ever done before. I’m going to encourage you to look at both relationships and yourself in a totally new way.

In short, I’m going to show you how to go from doormat to goddess.

Back story: At one of the low points in my dating career, my girlfriend sent me Pablo Picasso’s quote that says there are only two kinds of women. He divides them up into doormats and goddesses. Ouch. Wait, it gets worse! Guess what? Most of us are doormats. I know that sounds harsh but, if you think about it, it’s true. We let men (or our lack of one) dictate how we feel about ourselves. We chase after them. We compete with other women for their attention and approval. We’ll accept bad behavior and disrespect. We’ll continue in relationships where we are hurt, cheated on, and mistreated. When we allow a man to walk all over us, we are a doormat. Plain and simple.

Not so the goddess. When I think of a goddess, I think of a woman who is secure and confident with herself. A man doesn’t dictate her self-worth. She doesn’t fall all over herself trying to impress them. Instead, she lets men come to her. She is the picker and the chooser. She’s not easily attained and the man who wins her feels like he has won an incredible prize. Because he has to invest a lot to get her, he becomes invested in both her and in the outcome of the relationship.

I wonder which woman Pablo Picasso – and every other male on earth – would want. If you were a man, who would you want to be with? How attracted are you to that overly-eager guy who calls you non-stop and always seems to place himself right next to you? Doesn’t everyone want to be with someone they see as high status? Someone who isn’t so easy to get? Someone who presents a bit of a challenge?

Instinctively you know that you want a man to view you and treat you like you are special prize. You want to be adored. It’s okay, girlfriend. When women start to get honest about what it is they truly want, we discover that deep down we all want the same thing. It’s part of our genetic makeup. So I say be honest with your desires. And work to make them a reality.

Your “Jenn X” was once a doormat herself. Big time. And I know firsthand how badly that can suck. I know what it’s like to feel manipulated, mistreated, and misused. But as soon as I read that quote, I knew what I had to do. I knew who I wanted to be and how I wanted to be treated. I knew the type of man and relationship I wanted in my life. And so I began the process of evolving from doormat to goddess; from begging dog to dream girl.

When I wrote the article “How to Be a Goddess,” I knew I was onto something. I had a strong feeling that the word “goddess,” and the mentality and attitude that accompanies it, would resonate with women. But its success still surprised me. As of the time I write this, the article has gone viral and has been viewed close to 350,000 times. And even more importantly is how my readers responded to it. Many of you began to use the word itself in your letters and comments to me.

“I want to handle this like a goddess.”

“I’m trying to be a goddess.”

“What would a goddess do in this situation?”

Soon, “goddess” and “Jenn X” were synonymous. How amazing is that?

Transforming into a goddess is a process; it takes time and practice. But it is so worth it. Not only will you see a dramatic improvement in your romantic relationships, but in every other aspect of your life as well. And by reading “How to Be a Goddess,” you’re taking the first step toward that goal. In fact, this entire book is a series of steps; building blocks with which to create a whole new you. It’s a guidebook which will walk you through each part of the journey to your new-found status as a “goddess.” And I’ll be with you the entire way.

So kick back and enjoy. Get ready for some serious girl talk, radical honesty, and my keys to success. As you read, be sure to keep this in mind: If I can go from doormat to goddess, so can you.
