A charming little homespun American Christmas story.
A great, short, relaxing and fun read for everyone. A good clean story. A different and uniquely American kind of Christmas story, suitable for all readers. Set in the Midwest in the late 1940's. A physically impaired man finds 3 orphans living in the old barn of a farm he recently purchased. He rescues the children from the collapsing barn and cares for them as best he can. He knows little about them and they won't tell him much, but they seem to know a great deal about him. The children have been fending for themselves since the previous owner died in a house fire. He brings the children into his house and cares for them even providing them with an extraordinary Christmas, with a little help from his new friends. If you like Christmas, or the holidays, and you like children and long for the days when life was a little simpler, then you have to read this story. .....I was in the kitchen loading up the wood stove there when I heard yelling and someone with tiny feet running very fast down the hall. As they got closer I could tell it was Billy. He was yelling, “Mister! Mister! You have dragons in your house. They're in the walls!” He ran right past me and into the living room. I just figured he didn't see me. I knew it couldn't be a simple bad dream or even a nightmare because he hadn't gone to sleep yet. I went after him and on his way back, he literally ran into me. He was terrified and out of breath, and I asked him to show me these dragons. Now, I figure that living in the barn for two years or so, they must be familiar with every kind of animal, wild and domestic that are native to this part of the world, so I was really curious to see what manner of creature constitutes a “dragon.”
He grabbed me by the hand and dragged me down the hall toward their room and then all of a sudden he stopped and yelled, “There's another one!” As he pointed to the wall register where the hot air from the furnace comes out. I asked him, “Is that it, is that the dragon?” He nodded. I got down on my knees, which is not easy for me to do, and held him. Now mind you. I'm laughing the whole time, and I'm sure Billy didn't see the humor in all of this. I told him that there are no dragons. That the hot air comes from the furnace in the basement. It was at this point I noticed the other two standing in the hallway looking a little concerned. Billy then asked me the two next logical questions, what's a furnace and what's a basement?........
