Rain. It was precisely 11:15 p.m., when the dispatcher at Hollywood Division announced the 911 emergency call: "Female civilian down. 920 North Cherokee Avenue, Apartment No. 305, Hollywood. All units in the area, please respond immediately." Detective Lieutenant Joe Kellermann narrowed his eyes slightly as he goosed the unmarked Crown Vic, picked up a little speed. He always came across as the cerebral tough guy. Seated beside him in an almost languid position, was his partner, Detective Sherrell Meacham. Meacham, about ten years younger, was an incredibly attractive black woman. Her eyes were the color of mahogany, her skin was tawny perfection, her hair was pulled back and gathered in a tight chignon. Her makeup was dead on. She liked to say she'd given up on all the bullshit and the bayous of New Orleans, the Big Easy. She'd come to L.A., 'the big city,' where she could lose herself. Sunset Boulevard was a barrage of flickering neon lights advertising the bars, restaurants, hotels, the massage parlors, the strip joints, the head shops. A huge spectacular billboard showcased Cher, who was headlining at the Colosseum in Las Vegas. The rain was coming down heavy now. Kellermann peered through the rain-soaked windshield. Garish splotches of gaudy neon reflected in the mirror of wet pavement. The wipers were slapping back and forth; their hypnotic action was making Kellermann drowsy. He cracked the window. The cool air felt good, refreshing. The brown unmarked sedan moved east on Sunset to Vine Street, where Kellermann cut a sharp left. Another left on Hollywood Boulevard took him past Grauman's Chinese. The Alta Vista Apartment complex on Cherokee was a tall three-storied building, probably built in the 1920s. It had not been spared the ravages of time. The word around the neighborhood was that the Alta Vista had gained some significance and intrigue as it was reportedly the one-time residence of Elizabeth Short, known as The Black Dahlia. Ms. Short's dismembered body was discovered in an open field in West Los Angeles. Her abductor was never found. The Black Dahlia Murder turned out to be one of the most notorious unsolved cases in LAPD history.

Murder in Malibu is a murder mystery

novel written by John L Evans. The

bullet-riddled bodies of Dianne

Mallory and her lover, Derek Ramsey

were discovered late on a Friday

evening by her husband, John, who

notified the police. He had been

staying at the couple's in-town

apartment, but had decided to check

out their beach house after receiving

an anonymous telephone call about

Dianne's assignations. Detective Lt.

Joe Kellermann and his partner, Tony

Rodriguez, are handling the

investigation. They are officially

LAPD officers; however, a shortage of

personnel in Malibu led to their being

temporarily assigned there. Their

investigations turn up some

interesting facts about both the

Mallorys and Ramsey. Dianne and John,

who were screenwriting partners, were

considering getting divorced, and

Ramsey had recently and very abruptly

broken off an engagement with his

fiance while she was in the final

stages of making wedding

arrangements. His fiance, Cheryl

Hunter, quickly became the detectives'

prime suspect as her story was riddled

with falsehoods

Mr. Evans has created a superb mystery

novel. The reader can have fun

accompanying Johnny Madrid as he

searches out the mysterious killer of

a beautiful woman seeking to become a

film star. While the beginning is a

little slow, Evans' descriptive work

is like watching a movie. The reader

is promised an excellent read with a

page turner that cannot be put down

until the very last word.
