Inspector Lestrade brings Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson an account of six murders. The only fact common to them all is that the victims had all served terms of imprisonment for serious crimes. It appears that someone believes that they should have suffered execution, and has set out to take the law into his own hands. A note is found, signed 'The Justice Master', warning that he will not be deterred from his purpose, nor does he spare anyone who gets in his way. The inspector is angry with his superiors because he feels that their efforts to apprehend this man have been insufficient, hence his consultation with The Great Detective. The murders continue and Holmes, with the occasional interference of an Old Bailey solicitor, Mr David Grantly-Knight, resolves to bring the killer to justice. The Justice Master proves to be as elusive as he is merciless, and narrowly escapes a trap set by Holmes and Lestrade. Then comes an encounter near Plantain Castle.

“He apparently leaves little to chance.” We both glanced at the body. “I fear that there was never any hope for Mrs Porter.”
“The wire has cut deeply into her throat, so our murderer is not without strength. As I recall from Lestrade’s account, The Justice Master reserves strangulation for his female victims, while using a firearm on all others.”
I nodded. “So, he has not deviated from the pattern. It appears that our supposition that Mrs Porter was a relative of his was made in error.”
“Not necessarily. Remember, Watson, we are almost certainly dealing with a madman. Is it not so that the reason of such deteriorates gradually?”
“It is believed that this is often so, yes.”
Holmes knelt beside the body. “By her expression, she was taken by surprise, which means that she trusted her killer to a degree since he could not have approached by stealth. She does not appear to have scratched him with her rather over-long fingernails, which suggests she was attacked from behind. The ground shows no sign of disturbance, so the altercation was brief, as is indicated by the severity of the wound.”
“The jugular vein would have been severed almost immediately,” I agreed.
