Strange and funny things happen during trail runs and at trail running events, run trails long enough and you have a lot of stories to tell. Accomplished ultra and trail runner and humorist Mark Henderson has actually put his stories in writing and compiled several of them into his self-published book Running and Other Bad Habits.
Through the dialogue of characters Dolf and Scritch, Henderson shares his version of true stories, stories that stretch the truth and some that read like total trail fiction. Throughout the book the scary thing for me was that I could personally relate to each and every story. Although I’ve never met or even heard about Mark Henderson prior to reading his book, I felt as though I had personally witnessed each story…or he was involved in each of my experiences they reminded me of. It was a strange feeling reading about fictional (or at the least I wish they were fictional) characters and knowing that I met a person once that could be that very same runner.
Throughout the 21 short stories that span close to 200 pages you get the true essence of how Henderson feels about ultra and trail running. As he pokes fun at among other things ‘gadgetry’ (or more to the point the people that worship it), trail pooping, trippin’ and more, Henderson’s passion for just plain running comes through. “They tell ya when ta start and they tell ya when ta stop – in between ya just gotta keep runnin’. How hard can that be?”, that pretty much sums up the entirety of Henderson’s ultra marathon running advice in the book, the rest is just entertainment (and rightfully meant to be that way).
