Since diagnosed with Stage IIC ovarian cancer in 2008, I educated myself about this deadly disease's symptoms, statistics, drugs, and tests. Just as I always have done when faced with a life changing event, I turned to my faith the blessings of family and friends, complementary and traditional therapies, humor, and role models such as Norman Vincent Peale, Albert Schweitzer, Wayne Dyer, and others.
This is a book of information and inspiration as I attempt to provide hope with the knowledge that "the beauty of the soul, the real me and the real you, outshines the effects of cancer, chemotherapy, and radiation."

I believe that people come into our lives for a definite purpose, and that is to learn and grow. Sometimes they are negative, evil, or bad people, but we are still to learn from them. I can use my stepfather as an example. I learned why abuse occurs and that it was not my fault. Once I forgave him, I was able to help other people who suffered from abuse. Fortunately I have been blessed with many kind and beautiful souls, who have taught me so much about me and my life.

Outshine is so much more than a memoir. Karen Ingalls uses her own experiences to guide the patient through the turbulent waters of ovarian cancer. The story starts with the discovery of a large tumour, moves through the surgery and treatments and on into the post-treatment period. Karen graphically describes the emotional roller coaster, covering points relevant to all on the cancer journey, not only ovarian cancer. In addition to the poignantly-told narrative, this book also includes a list of warning signs, risk factors, discussion points for both the patient and loved ones, and recommended resources.
I finished this easy-read book in two sessions, and would recommend it for all women, no matter what their age. Known as "The Silent Killer", by the time Ovarian Cancer's symptoms grab our attention it is often too late. Read this book and be pre-warned what to look out for. It could save your life.
