Viktor Bjornsson peered into the fog as the drakkar bobbed up and down on the ocean waves. He could feel the ship sway with each swell but could not see anything around him. The mist was thick, so thick that he could cut it with a knife. Raindrops clung to his cape forming a myriad of ice crystals on the wool. It was cold—bone-chilling cold. Each time he exhaled, he could barely see his breath hanging in the air because of the dense haze.
“Bjornsson,” Amund said, meandering through the grey, “We are off course, and I cannot make our heading because of the fog.”
“Dawn will break, Amund,” he continued, “and the sun will clear it out.”
“I pray it happens soon,” Amund grumbled, “I have not seen anything as thick as this before.”
“Look toward the sky,” he said, nodding his head.
Light pierced through the clouds cutting the murky soup that surrounded them, melting it gradually. Splashes of yellow and pink chiseled away at the darkness. As Viktor stared into the veil, he saw the faint outline of the sea. The water was dark and flat except for the white peaks that formed on the cresting waves.
“My lord,” one of the warriors said anxiously, “Come quickly.”
Viktor scrambled toward the edge and peered over the side of the ship. He swallowed hard as threads of mist wrapped around the ship like a fishing net. From bow to starboard, it stretched along the planks spinning a thick layer that glistened in the light. Something terrible was about to happen, he thought, digging his fingers into the wood.
From out of nowhere, he heard a voice whisper on the breeze.
Come to me.
“Amund,” Viktor started to shake. “Did you hear that?”
“Hear what?”
Viktor looked into the dark water and heard a seductive moan bubble up from the sea. A gentle breeze teased his neck, seducing him like a woman licking his skin. He could feel a vapory tongue glide along his collarbone. Nipping. Teasing. Heat rose in his body with each tender caress. His manhood steadily thickened, diverting his thoughts to pleasure instead of the danger that lurked below. It was difficult to concentrate, hard to focus.

“Who are you?” he groaned.
Suddenly, the ship lurched forward, rocking back and forth. Viktor snapped to attention as fear smothered the flames that had burned in his loins. He grabbed the rigging with both hands just as the hull buckled from underneath his feet. The iron rivets started to pull away from the timber. A sharp sound cracked overhead. He glanced up and saw that the sails had been torn in two. Impossible, he thought. Nothing could shred through thick wool like that—at least nothing in this world.
Sweat poured from his brow as the wind howled ferociously. Terror filled him. He felt helpless, vulnerable. No matter how hard he tried, Viktor could not do anything to save his crew or his ship. His battlefield skills were useless against the tempest. Instinct told him to fight, but how could he fend off something that he could not see? He and the others were at the mercy of an invisible foe, something determined to destroy them.
