Born in 1821 in St. Andrews, Scotland, Tom Morris began his golfing career in the feathery ball era. He witnessed the transition from feathery ball to gutty ball to the lively rubber-cored ball that appeared at the turn of the century. He also encouraged early golf clubs to form and laid out their courses around the UK and Ireland. His advice was sought by all including notable golf course architects such as Alister Mackenzie, Donald Ross, and Harry Colt (designer of Pine Valley in New Jersey, perenially ranked number one course in the world).

The book chronicles his life; his British Open triumphs and those of his son, Young Tom; his dealings with the death of his wife and children; and the many golf courses he designed.

Foreword is written by Donald Steel, noted English golf course architect.
