Excerpt
I poked my head around the door and called out “Hello, hello, anyone home?”
No answer.
The office was empty, so was the side room, which contained a small wardrobe and an old sofa. A moth-eaten ragged blanket lay partially on the sofa. It did not take much deduction to know someone slept on the sofa and, in all probability, had left in a hurry.
To further my supposition, the coffee table supported a half-full ashtray and a half-empty bottle of whisky.
Returning to the main office I saw a photograph of a ruggedly handsome man on the wall above the filing cabinet. So, this was what Mike Green looked like, was it? I recognised him. I think I must have met him before, before this morning that is.
I sat in the chair behind the desk. Another photograph of the man, only this time he had his arms wrapped around a wavy-haired girl.
I got another one of those jolts, a zapping spark. This time it hurt my brain. It was like a powerful stab of a migraine. I cradled my head in my hands as another ‘ZAP' hit me. It was so intense it forced me from the chair and onto my knees.
It took a while for the pain to subside, but as it did memories started to flood back.
Maria.
That was the girl in the photograph.
The man was Mike Green.
I knew Mike Green well, intimately well.
I was Mike Green.
Or at least I was before my change, my conversion to a robot. Exactly how that happened and why?
That part did not come to me immediately.
However, I could remember everything else, like the day I met Maria...
