If you like sweet romance between people old enough to know how love works, this book is for you.
Kathryn Sinter had run away from home because home wasn’t what she thought it was. She had chosen Seattle because she liked seafood and flowers and it was as far as she could get from her soon to be ex-husband without drowning in the ocean. Her plans for re-invention did not include a man, but Craig Hameston, a recently retired diver in the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve, was hard to ignore. Part Scottish and part Esquimalt First Nations Family, he turned her weekend trip to Victoria, B.C., into a personal tour of his hometown. The day after they met she was glad to be next to him, watching his sure hands and feet working the controls of his seaplane as they soared into the September sky on their way to a perfect picnic spot on Vancouver Island. Craig appeared to be an old-school kind of gentleman. Maybe it was part of his military tradition. And, he was rock solid and sexy. When she returned to Seattle, part of her hoped she would see him again, but it scared the hell out of her to think about committing to a serious relationship with any man, even a man as special as Craig.
Excerpt
“I’m sitting here in the most ridiculous apartment in Seattle feeling very lonely. The last time I was here, I was with a sexy woman wearing my muscle shirt.”
Kathryn laughed.
He said, “And, thanks for doing the dishes before you left. I was thinking about warming up some of the fiddlehead soup and making cheese toast to go with it. Interested?”
“I was sitting here trying to talk myself into rushing to make the early evening performance cycling class and picking up take-out on the way home.”
“Would you come if I promised to just feed you? Nothing else?”
Kathryn was silent.
“If you could stay just a little while after supper, I could rub your feet in case you’re very tired after your first day of full-time work at the shop.”
Kathryn looked at her watch.
“I have to be back to work for a charter at 10 o’clock tomorrow morning.”
“I have to be at the flower shop at 8 o’clock.”
Kathryn looked at her watch again. She said, “It would be 7 o’clock by the time I could get there.”
“The soup would be hot and waiting for you. You could be back home by 10 o’clock after just a little bit of spoiling.”
Kathryn giggled. “You are incorrigible. A terrible influence. I’m on my way.”
She knocked on his door at 7:05. He hugged her and hung her jacket on the hook beside his black bomber jacket.
As promised, the soup was hot and on the table, along with a couple of diet Cokes.
“The cheese toast will be ready in a minute. Tell me the truth, was it me or the cheese toast that brought you?”
“Both. I like both,” she said.
“Fair enough,” he said.
They made small talk as they enjoyed the soup and cheese toast. Kathryn finished her second piece of toast. She said, “I wish I didn’t like cheese so much.”
“That cheese will look very good on you. Come on over to the couch and stretch out while I take the dishes to the sink. I’ll do them after you’re gone.”
He plumped a pillow and eased it under her head.
When the table was cleared, he sat down on the couch and put her feet in his lap and started rubbing them.
“That feels so good.”
He slid her pants legs up to her knees and began trailing his fingers all around her legs.
“Is this the way your grandmother scratched you?”
“Not exactly. When she did it, I just felt totally relaxed and sleepy.”
“And, how do you feel now?”
“Like a spoiled woman who is always wanting more.”
He cocked his head and smiled.
“More?” he asked.
She sat up on one elbow and said, “More.”
He laughed. “Now who is being a bad influence? I promised soup and cheese toast and a little spoiling. I’m trying to keep my word, but if you really want more now.”
“I really do.”
“Just a minute.” He put her legs down and walked back to his bedroom and returned wearing a black silk robe and carrying a small silk robe the color of her eyes. He handed it to her. “I’ll be waiting for you in the bedroom.”
It was midnight when Kathryn turned the key in the lock of her condo.
