Motherlover is a humorous, erotic private eye novel, part of a series called Mother.
Motherlover is an erotic private eye novel starring Frank "big Mother" Harley, his lipstick lesbian wife Mavis, and a cast of characters which includes Hammer, a bisexual thief and Big Guy Investigations operative, Jellybean Randall, another BG operative and ex-cop, and Sherry, Frank's possibly legal temp secretary. Motherlover takes up where its prequel, What's A Mother To Do? left off, but is also a stand-alone novel. As usual, someone is trying to kill Frank. This time it's Stanley Goodman, Buddy Omaha's successor as crime boss of the Midwest, and he hires a stream of hit-persons to do the job, including a beautiful bi woman known as the Black Mamba. Suzi Saffron, as she is also known, fails in her first murder attempt, the first time she's ever failed to carry out one of her deadly assignments. She befriends Frank, because having failed to kill him, she now has a target on her back. She is also enamored of Frank's wife Mavis, whom she has vowed to steal. Frank , while dodging bullets, pursues his passion, drawing naked women, and often becoming involved with them, as does his wife. But Frank's world is changi9ng. He may lose his life, but failing that, his wife, his operatives and friends, and even his PI business. Has he become finally too jaded, too cynical, too downright amoral even for those he loves? It's a question he will have to answer, if he is able to survive.
Excerpt
“Stanley Goodman here,” a voice on the other end said.
I started to hang up. The guy sounded like someone selling insurance or trying to get me to upgrade my cable service, or maybe one of those credit card deals. Less interested in that sort of crap than I was at that moment would not have been possible.
“Fuck off,” I said.
He laughed. Quietly, easily, as though he were actually amused.
“Sorry, there’s no reason for you to have recognized my name. Allow me to start over. You’re Frank Harley, the man who put an abrupt end to the career of my predecessor, the individual generally known as Buddy Omaha.”
Uh-oh.
The truth was dawning on me.
“You’ve taken Buddy’s place,” I said.
As crime boss of the Midwest.
“Yes,” he said. “And you see, Frank, that presents me with a problem. I bear you no personal animosity, how could I? I don’t even know you. And as a matter of fact I’m glad Buddy’s dead. He was a horse’s ass of the first order, as I’m sure you’re aware. It doesn’t bother me at all that you killed him. I’m glad you did. It saved me the bother.”
I saw where this was going.
“Thing is, Mr. Goodman--”
“Please call me Stanley. We might as well be civil about this.”
“Stanley, the thing is, I didn’t kill Buddy. A police officer named Richard Johnson performed that valuable public service. It was in all the papers.”
He laughed again, somewhat chillingly. “I know what was in the papers, Frank, but I also know it was you that pulled the trigger, saving that cop’s life, and somewhat magnanimously letting him hog all the glory. He’s Chief of Police now, isn’t he?”
We both knew there had been nothing altruistic about my letting Richard Johnson have his day in the sun. It took the heat off me. Or so I had thought.
“You know this how?” I asked.
“Your friend the cop. He’s a bit of a dickwad, isn’t he? Or perhaps I should say, chicken-shit.”
Good old Dickless.
“So,” I said. “Where does this leave us?”
“I’m afraid I’m going to have to kill you,” he said.
That’s what I thought he was going to say.
I hung up.
