A trauma psychologist meets the challenges of breast cancer using mind-body-soul.
Naomi L. Baum, Ph.D., Jerusalem-based trauma psychologist and mother of seven, has just released the eBook version of “Life Unexpected: A Trauma Psychologist Journeys Through Breast Cancer” with Amazon. This short but intense memoir, viewed through the prism of Dr. Baum’s decades as a trauma therapist, professional experience, brings readers along on her challenging journey from diagnosis through treatment and recovery.
In a moving and accessible account, Dr. Baum shares her struggle to regain control in an uncontrollable situation. She chronicles her changing emotions as she revealed the diagnosis to family and friends, made medical decisions, and searched for complementary approaches to mitigate the effects of surgery, chemo and radiation.
As a lifelong Orthodox Jew and a dedicated mother and grandmother, Dr. Baum also explores the role of faith, spirituality and family in the healing process. The book also includes a frank discussion of her fears during the period, the new perspectives that she gained regarding her career, and the need to “take a vacation” from cancer. Each chapter includes practical hands-on tips learned from personal experience – useful advice for patients, families and friends struggling to cope with disease.
As Director of Jerusalem’s Resilience Unit at the Israel Center for the Treatment of Psychotrauma, Dr. Baum has developed programs to help communities, schools, police, firefighters and paramedics build resilience in the wake of terrorism, war and natural disaster. Her unique Building Resilience Intervention (BRI) has been implemented successfully in many regions faced with the task of recovering from disaster in Israel, Mexico, Spain, Haiti, Namibia and Turkey.
Readers of Dr. Baum’s “Life Unexpected” have expressed great enthusiasm, commenting that it is "…a must read for women with breast cancer and their families…", "…moving and instructive…", and "…practical and inspiring…" The book is currently available on Kindle, and will be coming out in soft cover in six weeks.Read more at www.naomibaum.com

Practical and Inspiring
This book will walk you through the practical stages of dealing with cancer -- how to deal with medical systems, how to share your diagnosis with your family and friends, how to stay on top of your situation. But more than that, Dr. Baum, a noted trauma therapist in Jerusalem, inspires, and shares in the most communicative way how she dealt with her own illness. She is open, spiritual, vulnerable, sometimes even shameless, but consistently wise and brave. I would recommend this book to anyone going through cancer and to their families and friends.
A Must Read
Dr Baum was diagnosed with cancer and she documented her experience from diagnosis though the end of treatment. It seemed to me like Naomi Baum was sitting next to me telling me her story.
She learned much about herself, treatment of cancer and how to get the best treatment, and passed on what she learned to the readers.
There are two things about this book that Iiked the best:
1) The list in the back of this book of the professional articles that Dr Baum has written on several topics such as Post Tramatic Stress, Help Children Cope with Trauma, and other helpful articles.
2) The larger pictures in this book of Dr. Baum and her family. This gives the book warmth and I felt like I knew Dr Baum after seeing these pictures.
After reading this book, I highly suggest that anyone who has cancer or a serious life threatening disease read this book. It is a book that I shall never forget.
Highly recommend this book!
Moving and instructive
Once I started reading, I simply couldn't stop. The book is open & honest, and at the same time analytic & practical. I started highlighting phrases that I particularly liked. But then gave up, since I was winding up with nearly the entire book in yellow.
I think it possibly transcends the subtitle. Although the particulars deal with breast cancer, its general approach could be useful for people going through a wide range of traumas. Maybe that's what prompted me to keep highlighting: I can see rereading sections to help get through a variety of situations.
