All Kipp wants to do is explore the old mines. But when girl next door Jane enters the picture, his life becomes more complex, more frustrating, but far more interesting.

All Kipp wants to do is explore the old local mines with his dog Nip. But when girl next door Jane enters the picture, his life becomes more complex, more frustrating and far more interesting. Reluctantly at first, Kipp allows her to join him on his adventures. But if he had known what that would mean, he would surely have thought twice. For his world is about to be thrown into a tail spin and Kipp will have to draw on all his wits, if he is to come out the other side unscathed.

This book is suited to ages 11 and up. But adults as well as young people will enjoy this, especially if you are a fan of some of the classics, such as Tom Sawyer or Pip and the Convict. This has elements of the classics, infused with the modern style. Set in the 1950s, this story follows the adventures of local lad, Kipp as he explores the old mines. The story is set in and around the historical Moonta Mines in South Australia. A place famous for its unique Cornish Heritage and its deep mining roots. This book is more than just a tale of wits. It is a love story, a drama, an adventure all rolled neatly into one book.

Excerpt

Kipp hadn’t heard his grandfather talk like that in a while. It gave him encouragement. He led out in front through the small tunnel, crawling on all fours, Jane’s Uncle groaning and struggling not far behind. He wondered if he was the sort of person who did manual labor or ran a business. Given he was a skinny, awkward-looking man, Kipp decided probably the latter.

After a little while, they came to several small openings, but had to go through a few more short tunnels before they were finally in the last opening immediately next to the chamber Kipp had taken Jane to when they retrieved the gem stones. He could hear noises next to them, muffled sounds. Laughter and more worrying, the sound of someone crying. Jane.

“It’s them.” He said to his uncle. Then his uncle got out a gun. Seeing it shocked Kipp. He didn’t pick Jane’s Uncle to own a gun, much less know how to use one. He brushed Kipp aside and suddenly looked determined. Kipp had no choice but to follow the man in. But he was moving suddenly very quickly, like he was eager to hunt down the criminals. But when Kipp heard gun fire, he panicked and rushed the rest of the way through the tunnel, coming out the other end to find two of the boys holding Jane’s Uncle, who now wore a gash to the head. The other boy, Trent, had the gun, which he pointed right at Kipp when he emerged into the chamber. Jane was lying, tied to the table with rope. She had a cloth in her mouth that was tied around the back of her neck. She was looking at Kipp and nodding in his direction, as if to tell him something.

Of Dreams and Angels
Kipp the Copper Coast Kid by Paul G Day is a suspenseful young adult novella featuring Kipp, a boy living near the Moonta Mines in South Australia. Together with his puppy love Jane Prescott and his dog Nip, they undertake a series of adventures as play-acting gives way to the real and the supernatural. In his own private world he calls Kipp’s Chamber, Kipp and Jane and Nip encounter a trio of dastardly brothers with bad intentions. Trent, Arnold and Jake Jansen are up to no good, and a series of fatal encounters lead to supernatural interventions that make the youngsters realize how their lives have truly been blessed.

The author pays tribute to classic teen adventure narratives with young romance challenged by personal crises which serves to bring the lovers ever closer together. The threat of the evil brothers is enhanced by the alcoholism of Jane’s father, depriving her of the shelter and protection of her home. Yet the departed family members are given a chance at redemption, reaching beyond the grave in helping Jane and Kipp. Even when a tragedy nearly pulls Jane and Kipp apart, Jane survives a near-death experience and gives both Kipp and the audience hope for a sequel to come.

Kipp the Copper Coast Kid by Paul G Day is a fun read and recommended for young adults looking for a healthy dose of traditional teen adventure.

Highly Recommended
This tale is related in the deceptively easy tones of a Grandfather telling his grandchildren a story, however, this story not only reflects the old style classical tales, it also deals with difficult issues that most adults seem to avoid discussing with young people. Issues that need to be discussed. Like love, honour, courage and more. Highly recommended.

Captivating Story of Young Love

Paul Day's captivating story of young love is set in and around the historical Moonta Mines in South Australia.
