Does what THEY say make a difference?
I woke again to the phone ringing. I have to pick up when my mother calls, or she will just leave a message to call her back, hang up the phone and dial my cell. If I don’t answer that one, she will leave a message, hang up and begin by calling the home phone again within ten minutes. I want it to be him, but more than anything I don’t want to hear the phone ring anymore and not be him, so I just pick up.
“You don’t sound good, how do you feel?” she says.
I just reply, “Yeah, I know,” rather than telling her that ALONG WITH the nauseated weakness and headache, I am also suffering the emotional battle of my doing, or rather not doing, the one thing that might have qualified my time as a one-night-stand. So would my Mom be proud of me, that I didn’t give it all up so easily to someone I had barely known, or would she be once again shocked by my extreme ability to back myself into a corner with nowhere to go…all in attempts to ESCAPE. Then I remember—she’s my Mom. Even if it takes her a little while, she will perfectly justify anything I do as PERFECT. But I don’t want her to have to justify all of this when I haven’t even been able to myself. That will have to be for another day. For now…I think that she just needed to hear that her baby was okay, whether it was true or not.
“What did the doctor say?” she opens again with during my long pause.
“The same,” I say because it was just easier. If I had mentioned anything possibly spreading to my lung, a piece of her would die every time I cough. In attempts to deal, she would tell all of the family and all of her people everywhere, until every cough around the world would become like a candle at the vigil in my honor, even while I am still around. She, and “THEY”—all the others, truly do mean well. But again, when things are not black and white, we sometimes lose ourselves in the interpretations of the gray. In my gray-colored times, “They” nearly kill me with the fears that I will not live through this, as well as enliven me with the desire to prove to them that I will.
In the meantime I will let my mother, along with other family and friends, interpret what “They” think. I know that what “They” think of all of this will be based on what “They” say on the local news. I probably would have been better a long time ago if I had listened to all that “They” said to do.
I have heard it all. “They” say to eat foods with antioxidants. “They” say not to eat too much with artificial sweeteners. You should just eat a lot of vegetables and maybe try organic chicken, but remember that “They” say be careful with grilling. “They” say it causes cancer from what “They” call carcinogens. “They” say to put lemon in your water, but be careful, because “They” say that germs from employees’ hands can be carried in the lemon peel, so “They” say that you should just use packets of lemon juice. Just make sure that it is pure lemon juice and not with any artificial flavoring because “They” say that is bad for you.
Sometimes I think, how can “They” say so much? And I want to ask, Mom—who’s “They”? But I remember “They” for as long as I can remember anything at all. “They” are a part of her world and because of that—our world too. “They” are experts of every kind. “They” are every news anchor, every doctor and lawyer of any specialty that will make a statement for media. “They” are every expert ever to go on TV or be printed in every magazine or newspaper…even the tabloids. “They” are made up of so many experts that “They” truly do know what “They” are saying. “They” have earned their credibility over time because “They” are ALWAYS THERE. So rather than set anyone straight that you cannot always live by what “They” say…I will appreciate that “They” entertain my mother at times that I cannot.
While I lie there, I am wondering IF I am doing what “They” would say that I should—IF I want a chance to be better at all. With that, I get up from the bed at once, ready to get ready, because I have heard so many times that sometimes “They” say you feel better if you get ready. “They” say if you lie around all the time, you can start to feel worse, rather than rested. “They” would know because “They” are the ones out talking to people all the time…making a difference in people’s lives. Yes, “They” make a difference whether you believe all of what “They” say.

Life changing for me
This author takes you on an excursion through escape, honesty, humor, imagination, and appreciation for every day. The author’s intriguing book title afforded me the opportunity to answer the question, “What is the color between black and white?” My answer, “gray.” Gray leaves room for differing opinions, openness, pondering, and questioning our lives. As I read the book, the images that immediately came to the forefront were my life’s events thus far — a relationship with God/my faith, romance/marriage, pregnancy, diagnosis, adoption, and death/loss of a loved one. Our attitudes to what life deals us and the way we respond to these events/experiences determines the outcome.
Read over and over!
We all have “stuff” in our life to deal with and we all deal with it in different ways. We are hopefully constantly changing and growing in positive ways. The Color Between Black and White is a perfect example of how to handle what ever life throws at you with grace and humor. This book will make you laugh out loud, give you goose bumps, and make you wipe away a tear or two. A thought provoking, inspirational journey that you get to take with “girl” that will stay with you even after you read the very last page. This is a book to recommend to your friends, book clubs, and to keep on your book shelf to read again and again.
LOVE it!
What a great book! Despite all of the challenges presented in everyone's lives - be it sickness, work pressures, life pressures, bills or just what to wear each day, SC Russell teaches us how to look for the sunny side no matter what cards you are dealt. She provides excellent insights on how focus on making others feel great. By focusing on others with true concern for their well being and making them know you care, you not only earn more respect and better treatment, but you also make yourself feel better knowing that you are helping others. This practice takes the focus off of the bad things that may be in your life because you are not constantly dwelling on it. She helps you keep in mind that everything happens for a reason and though it may take some time to figure out, stay positive, stay strong and always look for the sunny side! Thank you SC Russell for a life changing book!
