This story took me by surprise, and left my with a book hangover of the most enjoyable kind. I was unsure what or where the story was going to take me, but was pleasantly surprised by the journey. The mystery and suspense had me on edge and unable to put it down until the very end. The story was an inspiring story of friendship and unwavering determination for the truth and, in the end, justice.
The story had several strong characters. Each was well developed and their contributions to the plot unfolded in a way as to not bog down the reader. While I don’t really feel like I can get to detailed because I am afraid of giving things away, I will say that there were multiple times throughout the book I caught myself saying, “I did not see that coming!” The author did a wonderful job with the various plot twists and surprises which were easy to follow and felt natural to the story. Sometimes when stories try to give you a hearty plot, it gets so confusing and cumbersome to keep up with. Or they simple feel forced or out of place, that was definitely not the case with this one.
Claire picked a childhood vacation spot for her turn in girl’s weekend trip. She and her three friends from college have taken turns choosing/arranging girl’s weekend since they graduated college. Each of them bring something to their group. But each has their own insecurities and secrets too. So does the sleepy Victorian cottage they are renting for the weekend. Claire is determined to figure out the secrets it is trying to keep from them. She will find out more than she ever imagined?

The author introduced the four main characters early in the book. With four distinct personalities and totally different circumstances, they had remained friends since college. The four had an annual reunion and took turns choosing where they would stay. Claire chose Windward Cottage on Cape Cod, a place she had often come to as a child, without knowing they would discover a mystery that would put the four of them in danger.
When all arrived at the cottage, their nightly ritual was to go up on the widow’s walk, wine in hand, and share secrets about themselves. Soon after arriving, events occurred that led them to fear for their safety. When they came down from the widow’s walk, the fire was already lit, they found footsteps outside, and other mysterious things were happening. The author wove a lot of suspense throughout the story, enough to cause the reader to fear for the safety of the four women.
This book has it all – some mystery, a great deal of suspense, a touch of the paranormal, a scattering of humor, and threads of romance entwined all the way through.
When the book arrived, I picked it up intending to read a chapter or two, but the story and the characters pulled me in, and without putting it down, I read the whole book in one sitting. When a book holds that kind of power over you, you have to award it five stars.

I would not have normally read this book because I rarely read true fiction. However, I like to explore new genres. I prefer historical non-fiction and creative non-fiction. So it was with some hesitation that I began to read.
What a pleasant surprise. The book engrossed me in the lives of four female friends in such a way that at times, I felt I was with them at the beach house. I appreciated the pace of the unfolding suspense, never overloaded with information nor too slow to keep my interest. I found myself looking forward to that time of the day when I could pick up the story where I had left it. There are many unexpected twists and turns which kept me turning the pages.
I will not review the plot as many other customers have. What I would prefer to do is encourage you to discover this book. Not only for its story but for the writing itself. The vocabulary and language is appropriate to each character. The dialogue flows effortlessly.
When the story ended I thought to myself that I had taken a mini-vacation with friends. That is the best compliment to a novel - that is has transported the reader to another place and time. I hope that Ms. Davis will gift us with another novel.
