Virgin Horror Reader Doomed
I wish I could say that I read this book slowly and savored every word on every page. I wish I could say, in the end, that it was trash..that Horror was just what I always suspected it would be...a total waste of my time. Truth is, I can't say either thing. I read this book cover to cover in one sitting. The characters were compelling and very well developed. They were believable....their interactions and reactions.
Francis Barclay, Vampire! I could not believe how well defined he was-the creepiness of the black oily substance, his rapidly deteriorating and fragile physical condition was so consistent, so layered and with each mention of him, he took on a more believable presence than I anticipated-even to the end. I can see what is too come. Smoke and Ash! I can't wait for the sequel.
Great Read
A horror novel is not my preferred genre. However, the cover and synopsis of this book caught my eye. It starts with, "The boy was unremarkable....." Although the character is indeed a vampire and the book is being promoted as a horror novel, I found the story itself to be an intricately weaved murder mystery. The characters are well developed and you end up .... well, I can't spoil it now, can I? What impressed me most about this author's novel is that she has accomplished something that is very difficult to do -- she wrapped up the ending in a way that a book should be -- leaving the reader disappointed that the book ended, and wanting more! I look forward to more work from this author.

I give this book a five-star rating. I found myself having a hard time putting the book down. I was pulled into the story and found myself wondering what was going to happen next. The story has a great blend of mystery, suspense and action. This is the kind of book that makes the reader think about all the possible scenarios long after finishing the book. Now that I have finished the book, I would definitely want to read a sequel. It is unquestionably not your average vampire book. I would like to see, Risen, made into a movie.
