“You all right, baby?” Tony asked.
“Better than I’ve been in a long time,” I sighed.
“I got to tell you; I’ve never had anything like what I had with you this morning.”
“When it’s a perfect match, you have an awesome experience.”
“That’s right, Leona. I always knew you were different. I got to have you. We have to get married.”
“You can’t be serious.”
“Yes, I am serious.”
“Why are you doing this to me? You know I’m leaving in a few hours.”
“Answer my question. Will you marry me?”
“One day,” I hesitated. “I could see us together. But I need to get myself together.”
“Leona, I’m not giving up on us.”
As we pulled up in front of the house I tried to clear my head. I was nowhere near ready to be anyone’s wife. There was too much about life and my own spirituality I didn’t understand. No way was I getting married anytime soon.
My dad had already put my suitcases in the car which hit me like a ton of bricks. I didn’t want to leave Tony or my parents, but I knew I had to.
“I’m going now, Leona. I know your parents want time with you. Call me when you get to Oklahoma.”
“I will.”
“Come on and eat,” my dad called out.
“We fixed you some breakfast,” Mom said, as she waved good-bye to Tony.
I sat at the table in silence. I was exhausted and emotionally drained from my whole experience with Tony.
“Are you okay?”
I looked at my mother and forced a smile. “You know, I’m not sure.”
I made it to Fort Sill, Oklahoma and I was less than impressed.
If I had a choice between being at Fort McClellan, Alabama, Fort Ben Harrison, Indiana and this gloomy place, I’d rather be in Indiana. Fort Sill sat square in the middle of nowhere. I was in the desert. As soon as I got settled into my barracks, I called Tony. He wasn’t home so, I called my parents to let them know I arrived safely. After assuring them I was fine, I called Dennis. He was too high to make sense, so I ended up talking to Jennifer.
“I am sick of him, can you please come talk to him.”
“How far are you from the base?”
“Not too far, I’ll pay for the cab.”
I hopped a cab and tried to think of what to say to Dennis when I got there. It was hard trying to counsel someone when you enjoyed getting high yourself.
“Sis, you made it. Come in and have a drink. Come see my kids,” he stammered.
He was dressed in his fatigues and barefoot as he walked me to the door of the apartment.
“Go on in, Jen is in there,” he said.
“Where are you going?”
“I’ll be right back.” He turned around went to the apartment next door.
I knocked on the door and Jennifer let me in. I smiled when I saw Lamont. He was growing up fast. My joy was squelched when I noticed how messy their apartment was. There were piles of clothes everywhere, dirty dishes were on just about every flat surface that was exposed, and you could barely see the carpet from all the mess on the floor.
Then, I noticed Jennifer had a black eye and bruises around her neck.
“Jennifer, what’s going on?”
“Dennis jumped on me when I asked him to help me with the kids.”
“You can’t keep letting him do you like this. You need to get out of here. Does he hit the kids?”
She shook her head. “He isn’t going to hurt the kids; he doesn’t touch them. He tells me I pick them up too much. This is Rachel,” she said, nodding towards the baby girl sleeping in the crib. “She’s almost a year old. He loves her, but he acts like he’s scared of her. He’s a good provider, but he barely touches his kids at all,” she cried.
“I thought Dennis was doing fine. When I last talked to him, he trusted God with his life.”
“Yeah, he did until he started with them drugs and drinking. When he isn’t high, he’s the sweetest man.”
