Thomas Mower Martin living in bad economic times in England, left in 1862, age 25, with his wife Emma for Muskoka Ontario, Canada. He wanted to homestead pioneer and paint in his free time. The ground there was not suitable for vegetables and fruits so with some bitterness at having wasted a year there he went to Toronto. Seeing the economy was as bad there for jobs and business he decided to rent a small downtown studio and paint portraits. Artist friends he met told him landscapes which he preferred, did not sell in Toronto, they all went to New York. But he made a go of the portraits and made frames for buyers and artists to become known.
