Sam lifted the hood of his 1967 Chevelle. The smoke puffing from the engine meant a new radiator, but he didn't want to alarm his girlfriend sitting in the front seat. He and Edith had been dating for almost three years now and this was the first time he was able to afford a real vacation for the two of them.
They were driving across Arizona from Henderson, Nevada where they both lived. It was the first time the both of them were going to Wasteland Weekend, a post-apocalyptic camping event that he had saved for with two years of working overtime. He owned his own auto repair shop back home. It was small, but he hoped one day to branch out and make it a chain.
He had been a car guy ever since he could walk. He learned everything he knew from his Dad.
A master mechanic and a dinosaur in a dying field of engines without computers and cars with pure personality. He grabbed a rag from the trunk and attempted to twist off the cap to the radiator. But it was too hot; he knew better. The cap burned his hand leaving a puffy red stripe right down the center of his palm. He decided to sit with Edith for a few minutes while he waited for it to cool down.
