Prana is a Sanskrit word meaning life force and vital energy. It is the universal principle of energy or force. If you’ve had a busy day or just need to clear your thoughts from the day, meditation is a great way to complete your day as well. It can help you fall asleep faster. Meditation is also a great healer. The health benefits of meditation are described in Chapter 3.

Chapters 3 and 4 contain over 30 breathing exercises and specific meditations for you. You are sure to find quite a few that suits your needs and will be able to see the awesome benefits of using these techniques.

Chapter 1
Breath of Life

The breath… It is essential to survive. We can go without food and water for certain periods of time, but we can only go without breathing for a few minutes. The function of breathing facilitates all kinds of inner workings in our bodies. Without the breath, we would cease to exist.
There is normally no need for any instruction on how to breathe. It is an involuntary action. But some are breathing “incorrectly” where the lungs are not being filled to capacity. This is where there is shallow breathing or high breathing through the chest area instead of the abdominal area.

SHALLOW BREATHING
Some people normally breathe through their chest instead of their abdomen. When there is stress, anxiety or physical or mental pressure, the breath is usually shallow and quick. If the breath is shallow and quick, there is not enough force to fill the lungs.

Shallow breathing effectively prevents the lungs from being completely filled. Therefore, some of the lung functions are lost. This causes fatigue because the oxygen in the blood is reduced. When there is not sufficient oxygen, we are not expelling enough carbon dioxide. This causes a build-up of toxins in every cell in our bodies.

Oxygen starvation can lead to premature aging, reduced vitality, and a weaker immune system.
Shallow breathing can also cause fatigue, sleep disorders, anxiety, stomach upsets, heart burn, gas, muscle cramps, dizziness, visual problems, chest pain and heart palpitations.

With proper breathing, we can extend our life cycle as we are allowing for air to fill our lungs and rejuvenate our body.

ABDOMINAL BREATHING
This is also called Diaphragmatic and Belly Breathing. This is basically where you breathe by expanding the belly instead of the chest. The diaphragm is the most efficient muscle of breathing. It is a large, dome-shaped muscle located at the base of the lungs. Your abdominal muscles help move the diaphragm and give you more power to empty your lungs.

Have you noticed how babies breathe? You will see their chest move, but their belly is doing the work. Their belly rises and falls at a nice steady pace. Try lying on you back with your hands on your belly. Which way are you breathing? Your chest will move, but is the majority of the force coming from your chest or your stomach?

Train your body to do abdominal breathing. While lying on your back, take in a few slow, deep breaths. Feel your abdomen rise and fall.
While you are sitting in your chair, sit straight and start abdominal breathing. It will come naturally to you once you start breathing through the abdomen.

PRANA / VITAL LIFE FORCE
Prana is a Sanskrit word meaning life force and vital energy. It is the universal principle of energy or force. This is a non-physical essential energy flows through and around the body and is responsible for your being alive. We know they exist, but we cannot see them.

Other words used to describe this energy are breath of life, universal life force, life force energy, divine breath, vital life force, etc. The Chinese call it “chi" the Japanese “qi,” and Egyptians named it “ka”.
Prana flows through every living being, from plants to animals to humans. It is what “animates” us, so to speak. Once our body expires, the prana leaves as well. According to Yogi Ramacharaka, prana is in the air, but it is neither the air nor one of its chemical constituents.

We breathe it in with the air. It is taken up by the system along with the oxygen, and yet it is not oxygen. This prana is not simply comprised of the air we breathe, but the life force energy that animates human, plants, animals – all life forms.

This prana, this invisible Life Force, is likened to electricity, air and radio signals, for example. We know it is there, but it cannot be seen. Prana penetrates in places that air cannot enter. Prana plays a distinct part in the manifestation of life as well as physiological functions.
As we inhale air, that air is charged with prana. We are constantly extracting the prana from the air and appropriating it for our use. In ordinary breathing, we absorb and extract a normal supply of prana, but by controlled and regulated breathing, we can extract a greater amount of prana.
